APACHE JUNCTION, AZ — The city of Apache Junction is mourning the tragic loss of Officer Gabriel Facio, a dedicated member of the Apache Junction Police Department, who succumbed to his injuries following a violent shootout on Monday, June 9, 2025, near Ironwood Drive and Ray Avenue. He was surrounded by his loved ones as he took his final breath, leaving behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and unwavering service.
The fatal confrontation occurred as Officer Facio responded to reports of an armed individual in the area. According to investigators, the suspect—identified as Roger Nunez—opened fire during a confrontation with law enforcement officers. Officer Facio was critically wounded in the exchange and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where despite valiant efforts by medical teams, he passed away due to the severity of his injuries.
The news has sent shockwaves through the Apache Junction community and law enforcement agencies across the region. Officer Facio, who had proudly worn the badge for over a decade, was not only a respected officer but a beloved father, husband, son, brother, and friend. Known for his gentle spirit, calm demeanor, and genuine love for helping others, he was the kind of officer who never saw his role as just a job—it was a calling.
