CHICAGO, IL – Two Men Fatally Shot While Sitting in Car on West Side; Investigation Underway
CHICAGO, IL – A grim and heartbreaking scene unfolded late Friday night in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, where two men were gunned down while sitting inside a parked vehicle. The deadly shooting occurred in the 100 block of North Laramie Avenue, sending shockwaves through a community long burdened by cycles of violence and loss.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the victims—one identified as a 38-year-old man, and the other described only as a male believed to be between 30 and 50 years old—were inside a car when an unidentified offender, or possibly multiple offenders, approached and opened fire. Both men were shot in the head at close range, in what authorities say appeared to be a targeted act of violence.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly after 11:00 p.m. and transported both victims to Stroger Hospital of Cook County. Tragically, both men succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
As of now, the identities of the victims have not been released, pending notification of next of kin. The motives behind the shooting remain unclear, and no one has been taken into custody. Detectives with Area Four are actively investigating the case, canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and reviewing nearby surveillance footage in hopes of identifying those responsible.
The Austin neighborhood, one of Chicago’s most historically underserved communities, has long grappled with the impact of gun violence. Friday night’s fatal shooting adds to a growing list of lives lost to senseless brutality in an area where residents continue to call for increased safety, resources, and attention from city leaders.
As crime scene tape cordoned off the intersection into the early morning hours, nearby residents stood in stunned silence, grappling with the tragedy that had unfolded so close to home. For many in Austin, such scenes are painfully familiar, yet no less devastating.
One neighbor, who asked not to be identified, shared her distress: “We heard the shots, then saw the lights. And now there are two more people gone. It’s just heartbreaking. This has to stop.”
Community advocates and outreach workers have renewed calls for peace and intervention in the wake of the double homicide, urging anyone with information to come forward. Anonymous tips can be provided to CPD Area Four detectives or submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
While police continue to investigate and families await answers, the tragedy has once again highlighted the toll that ongoing gun violence takes on Chicago’s neighborhoods. The identities, stories, and loved ones of the victims remain unknown to the public—but their absence will be deeply felt by those who knew them.
