FATAL CRASH | FORT MYERS — One Person Killed After Being Struck by Box Truck on I-75
FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 19, 2025) — A tragic crash early Thursday morning has claimed the life of one person on Interstate 75 in Fort Myers, sending shockwaves through the Southwest Florida community. Authorities say the victim was struck and killed by a box truck in the southbound lanes of I-75 near the 135 mile marker just before 5:00 a.m.
Emergency responders from Fort Myers Fire Department and Lee County EMS were dispatched to the scene at 4:59 a.m., arriving swiftly in an attempt to render aid. Despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at 5:10 a.m. at the scene of the collision.
The crash has resulted in a right-lane closure on I-75 southbound, causing traffic delays for morning commuters and creating a somber mood along one of Florida’s busiest highways. Motorists have been urged to use caution in the area and seek alternate routes if possible, as cleanup crews and investigators continue to work the scene.
The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the incident. Details about how the pedestrian came to be on the highway, and the identity of the deceased individual, have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. The driver of the box truck remained at the scene and is reportedly cooperating with investigators.
“At this point, it’s too early to determine all the factors that may have led to this fatal collision,” said an FHP spokesperson. “Our priority is to collect all relevant evidence, speak with any witnesses, and determine the full circumstances that caused this tragic loss of life.”
Traffic on I-75 in the area remains slow-moving, as law enforcement officers conduct their investigation and accident reconstruction experts examine the vehicle involved. No charges have been filed at this time.
The identity of the victim is expected to be released later today or Friday, depending on when family members are formally notified. The incident marks another grim reminder of the dangers present on Florida highways, particularly in the early morning hours when visibility is limited and traffic patterns can be unpredictable.
This fatal crash adds to a growing number of tragic incidents along the I-75 corridor in Southwest Florida in recent months. Safety advocates are once again urging both drivers and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution, especially in high-speed, low-light environments.
Community members expressed their sadness and frustration on social media Thursday morning. “This is heartbreaking,” one local resident posted. “No one expects to start their morning with news like this. My heart goes out to the family of the person who lost their life today.”
BREAKING TRAFFIC UPDATE: As of 6:55 a.m., the right lane of I-75 southbound remains closed. Drivers are encouraged to check traffic updates and allow for extra travel time.
