In Loving Memory of Tony Hawkins MBE: A Lifelong Hero of the Sea

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved friend, colleague, and lifelong volunteer, Tony Hawkins MBE. Tony was not just a member of RNLI Dover Lifeboat Station—he was the beating heart of it for an incredible 65 years.

Tony first walked through the station doors in 1960, a wide-eyed 16-year-old ready to dedicate himself to a cause far bigger than himself: saving lives at sea. What began as a youthful calling quickly evolved into a lifetime of service, devotion, and bravery that few could match and none will ever forget.

Over the decades, Tony held almost every role imaginable within the lifeboat station. From crew member to mentor, from shore team to senior volunteer, Tony wore many hats—each with the same unwavering dedication. Whether he was braving harsh seas, coordinating launches, training new recruits, or sharing a laugh in the station kitchen, Tony brought with him a rare and radiant spirit that lit up every corner of our community.

Many people are alive today because of Tony’s courage, quick thinking, and calm resolve under pressure. He answered the call of duty without hesitation, time and time again, no matter the hour, the weather, or the personal sacrifice. His bravery was matched only by his humility; Tony never sought recognition, though he certainly earned it. His MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire), awarded in recognition of his outstanding service, was a proud moment for us all—but typical of Tony, he accepted it with quiet gratitude and quickly returned to doing what he loved: helping others.

But Tony was more than just a lifesaver. He was a friend, a confidant, and a source of constant positivity. His wit was as sharp as the sea air, and his laughter, a sound as familiar at Dover Station as the crashing waves. He had a story for every occasion, wisdom for every challenge, and a kind word for everyone who crossed his path.

To the generations of lifeboat crew who had the honour of learning from him, Tony was a true inspiration—a living example of what it means to serve with integrity, compassion, and strength. To know Tony was to be reminded of the very best of humanity.

We will miss his presence more than words can express. The sight of him standing at the harbour, the sound of his voice over the radio, the quiet confidence he brought to every launch—those memories are etched into the very soul of RNLI Dover.

Tony, thank you. Thank you for every hour, every launch, every life saved, and every smile shared. You’ve left behind a legacy that will continue to guide and uplift us. You were not just a volunteer; you were, and always will be, a legend.

Rest peacefully, dear friend. You will always be part of our crew.
