Rowan County Teen Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in Fatal Shooting of Friend
Rowan County, NC – June 21, 2025 — A Rowan County teenager is facing an involuntary manslaughter charge after what authorities describe as a tragic and preventable shooting involving two close friends. The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) has arrested 19-year-old Colton Alexander Adkins in connection with the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Jayden Hunter Hicks early Saturday morning.
According to an official statement from the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence on 145 Hutchins Way at approximately 5:02 a.m. on June 21 after receiving a distressing 911 call from Adkins himself. The caller reported that he had accidentally shot his friend and was attempting to administer life-saving aid.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they found Hicks suffering from a critical gunshot wound. Despite Adkins’ efforts and the prompt response of first responders, Hicks was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the two teens had been hanging out in Adkins’s room, reportedly listening to music, when the incident occurred. Adkins told investigators that he picked up a firearm, pointed it in Hicks’s direction, and pulled the trigger, unaware or unmindful of the danger. The weapon discharged, striking Hicks fatally.
Authorities emphasize that there was no indication of malice or intent to harm. However, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office has determined that Adkins’ actions were reckless and ultimately resulted in the unintended death of his friend. As a result, he has been formally charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, a felony offense that applies in cases where a death occurs due to negligent or careless behavior.
Adkins was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Rowan County Detention Center. His bond has been set at $10,000 secured. As of Saturday evening, it was not immediately clear if he had obtained legal representation or when his first court appearance is scheduled.
The Sheriff’s Office noted that Adkins remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators, including making the initial 911 call and attempting CPR until emergency personnel arrived.
“This is a heartbreaking case that underscores the very real dangers of handling firearms irresponsibly,” the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Two families are devastated today — one mourning an unimaginable loss, and another grappling with the consequences of a moment that cannot be taken back.”
The investigation remains active, though officials say they do not anticipate additional charges at this time. Authorities are continuing to interview witnesses and conduct forensic examinations of the firearm involved.
Friends and community members who knew both young men have begun expressing their grief on social media, describing Hicks as a “bright soul with a kind heart” and expressing disbelief over the sudden and tragic turn of events.
As the Rowan County community mourns this loss, officials are once again urging gun owners and the public — especially young adults — to treat all firearms with respect and to never point a weapon at another person, even in jest.
A memorial for Jayden Hicks is expected to be organized in the coming days by friends and family. No funeral arrangements have yet been publicly announced.
