Florence County Sheriff’s Office Arrests Devin Scott Raper Following Fatal Shooting of Trey Dean Wright

JOHNSONVILLE, SC — A tragic shooting has shaken the community of Johnsonville after 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright was killed late Tuesday night. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) has confirmed the arrest of 19-year-old Devin Scott Raper in connection with the homicide.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. on June 24, 2025, FCSO deputies responded to a report of a shooting on First Neck Road, just outside Johnsonville. When deputies arrived on the scene, they found Trey Dean Wright lying in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead despite efforts to save him.

Florence County Coroner Keith Von Lutcken officially identified the victim as Trey Dean Wright, a local teenager whose death has devastated friends, family members, and the broader Johnsonville community.

Through a swift and collaborative investigation, law enforcement officials identified Devin Scott Raper, of 5898 Juniper Bay Road in Conway, South Carolina, as the primary suspect. On June 25, 2025, Raper was taken into custody in Conway. He has been formally charged with Murder (S.C. Code Ann. §16-03-010) and Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime (S.C. Code Ann. §16-23-490).

According to investigators, the shooting allegedly followed a verbal altercation between Raper and Wright. The argument reportedly escalated, resulting in Raper allegedly opening fire on Wright, fatally wounding him.

The arrest was made possible through a coordinated effort involving the Florence County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Bureau, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, and the Horry County Police Department. The cooperation of these agencies ensured a swift apprehension of the suspect without further incident.

“This case represents a heartbreaking loss of a young life, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Trey Dean Wright,” said an FCSO spokesperson. “Thanks to the teamwork of our partners in law enforcement, we were able to bring the suspect into custody quickly. However, our investigation remains active, and we are pursuing all leads.”

Devin Scott Raper is currently being held at the Florence County Detention Center, where he is awaiting a bond hearing. The FCSO has stated that the investigation is ongoing and that additional arrests are possible as new evidence emerges.
