Upper Gwynedd Bicyclist Identified in Fatal Crash: Investigation Ongoing Into Tragic Collision on Allentown Road

UPPER GWYNEDD TOWNSHIP, PA — The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has formally identified the bicyclist killed in a devastating crash earlier this month as John E. Stone, 55, of Upper Gwynedd. The fatal incident occurred on June 12 at approximately 5:57 p.m. at the intersection of Allentown Road and Green Street, where Stone was struck by a vehicle while cycling near his home.

According to the coroner, Stone died from ligamentous separation of the spinal column from the skull base, a condition medically known as atlanto-occipital dislocation, or more commonly referred to as internal decapitation. Authorities confirmed that Stone died immediately upon impact.

The horrific nature of the injuries and the sudden loss have shaken the local community, many of whom have called for a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy

Investigators say both Stone and a 2019 Honda Accord were traveling in the same direction — from Valley Forge Road toward Broad Street on Allentown Road. Stone, riding his bicycle along the shoulder, attempted to make a left turn toward Green Street. At that moment, he entered the path of the Honda, which then struck him on the front driver’s side.

Despite the immediate and devastating nature of the impact, bystanders rushed to help, performing CPR until first responders arrived. Emergency crews from VMSC Emergency Medical Services and the Upper Gwynedd Police Department took over lifesaving efforts, but tragically, there was nothing they could do.

Allentown Road remained closed for more than four hours, reopening at 10:12 p.m., as members of the North Penn Area Crash Team, Montgomery County detectives, and local law enforcement meticulously documented the scene and gathered evidence.

Driver’s Identity Withheld, Charges Pending Review

The name of the driver of the Honda Accord has not been released, and no charges have been filed as of yet. However, police confirmed that the case has been forwarded to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, which is now reviewing all aspects of the crash to determine whether criminal charges or traffic violations are warranted.

The Upper Gwynedd Police Department emphasized that the investigation remains active, and they are working closely with the DA’s Office to analyze witness statements, crash reconstruction data, and any potential video footage that may have captured the incident.

A Community Mourns, Questions Remain

The death of John E. Stone has deeply affected the Upper Gwynedd community. Neighbors describe him as a familiar face, often seen riding his bike through town. In the aftermath of the crash, a small memorial with flowers and candles has been placed near the intersection of Allentown Road and Green Street, where the accident occurred.

“He was someone who loved to be outdoors. He always had a friendly wave when he passed by,” said one longtime resident. “It’s tragic to know his life ended that way, and I hope the investigation brings answers and accountability.”

Call for Witnesses

Authorities continue to urge any members of the public who may have witnessed the collision or possess dashcam or surveillance footage to come forward.

“We know there were several people on the scene who assisted, and we’re grateful for their efforts,” said a spokesperson for the Upper Gwynedd Police Department. “If there are others who saw the incident or have additional information — especially visual recordings — we encourage them to contact us immediately.”

Tips and footage can be submitted directly to the Upper Gwynedd Police Department or via the Montgomery County Detective Bureau.

Looking Ahead

As the investigation continues, Stone’s family and the wider community await clarity. Whether this crash was an unavoidable accident or the result of negligence, many are hopeful that justice — in whatever form appropriate — will follow.

The tragedy is also sparking renewed conversations around road safety, cyclist awareness, and the need for clearer infrastructure to protect vulnerable road users in Montgomery County and beyond.
