BUTLER, GA – July 4, 2025 – A tragic domestic incident has rocked the small town of Butler, Georgia, as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) confirms the death of 60-year-old Angela Montgomery, allegedly at the hands of her nephew, 25-year-old Zadarius Montgomery.
According to the GBI, the shooting occurred in the early morning hours of Friday, July 4. At approximately 1:20 a.m., Zadarius placed a call to 911, reporting that he had shot and killed his aunt. Deputies from the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, along with officers from the Butler Police Department and Reynolds Police Department, responded immediately to the residence.
When authorities arrived, they discovered Angela Montgomery deceased inside the home, suffering from a gunshot wound. Zadarius Montgomery was taken into custody at the scene without incident and later booked into the Taylor County Jail. He is now facing charges of homicide, pending further legal proceedings.
GBI Leads Investigation
The GBI has taken over the investigation, working alongside local law enforcement to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Crime scene investigators processed evidence throughout the morning while agents interviewed potential witnesses and individuals familiar with the family dynamics.
Authorities have not released a motive at this time, and it remains unclear what events led up to the fatal shooting. However, investigators have confirmed that Angela and Zadarius were relatives and may have shared a close living arrangement.
The GBI emphasized that the case remains open and active, and findings will be turned over to the Taylor County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution once the investigation is complete.
Community Shaken by Violence
The shocking nature of the crime has left residents in Butler and the surrounding Taylor County community heartbroken. Many knew Angela Montgomery as a kind and familiar presence in the area, and her death has stirred grief and disbelief.
“It’s just devastating,” said one local resident. “You never expect something like this to happen here—especially within a family.”
The incident occurred during what should have been a festive holiday weekend, adding a somber tone to Independence Day in the region.
Legal Proceedings to Follow
As of now, Zadarius Montgomery remains in custody, and formal court appearances are expected in the coming days. Prosecutors will review the GBI’s findings before determining the full scope of charges to be filed.
Funeral arrangements for Angela Montgomery have not yet been announced, but those close to her are already expressing their sorrow and remembering her as a compassionate and caring woman whose life ended far too soon.
