Tragic Shooting at Auxier Bridge Claims One Life; Police Search for Suspect Ongoing
Prestonsburg, KY — April 25, 2025
A peaceful Friday afternoon in Floyd County was shattered by violence when a shooting occurred at the Auxier bridge, located just north of Prestonsburg. Authorities have confirmed that one person is dead as a result of the incident.
Floyd County Coroner Greg Nelson verified the fatality but declined to release additional information at this time, citing the early stage of the investigation. The identity of the victim has not been disclosed, pending notification of family members.
According to a source close to the investigation who spoke with Mountain Top News, the suspected shooter remained at large as of 5:50 p.m. Law enforcement officials have not made any arrests in connection to the incident. In the absence of a suspect in custody, a sense of urgency and unease has spread throughout the local community.
In response to the shooting, a significant police presence has descended upon the area surrounding the Auxier bridge. Kentucky State Police, Floyd County Sheriff’s deputies, and other local law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the site, actively investigating the scene and searching for leads. Forensic teams have been seen working near the bridge, and officers are questioning witnesses and collecting surveillance footage from nearby businesses and homes.
As a result of the investigation and ongoing search efforts, Route 321 has been closed to all traffic. The road closure stretches from Hillbilly Market on the southern side of the bridge to the junction of Route 3 on the northern end. Drivers are being redirected to alternate routes, and authorities are urging the public to avoid the area for their safety and to ensure emergency personnel can do their jobs without interruption.
Residents in the vicinity have expressed shock and concern over the violence. Many described the Auxier bridge area as typically quiet and scenic — a place frequented by locals for fishing, walking, and enjoying the river view. “We’re used to seeing families out here, not crime tape and police cars,” said one nearby resident who asked not to be named.
Law enforcement agencies have not yet released a description of the suspect or any known motive behind the shooting. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office or Kentucky State Police.
As night falls, the investigation remains active and ongoing, and the community waits anxiously for answers. This tragic event has once again highlighted the fragility of peace in even the most serene rural settings, as Floyd County grapples with the loss of life and the pursuit of justice.
