Duluth, MN — Mourning the Loss of Mark David Schutz, A Pillar of the Fishing and Recovery Communities

The city of Duluth and the broader fishing and recovery communities across Minnesota are grappling with a profound loss following the passing of Mark David Schutz. Mark died on April 24, 2025, at the age of 56, due to heart-related complications, leaving behind a legacy marked by compassion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the people and causes he loved.

Born and raised in Duluth, Mark embodied the spirit of the North Shore: hardy, generous, and deeply connected to the natural world. A lifelong fisherman, he found joy and purpose on the waters of Lake Superior and the many inland lakes and rivers of Minnesota. His expertise was matched only by his enthusiasm; whether guiding newcomers on their first fishing trip or sharing secret spots with old friends, Mark’s love for fishing was infectious. To many, he was more than an expert angler — he was a mentor, a teacher, and a steadfast friend.

Yet Mark’s impact reached far beyond the docks and the shoreline. Having faced and overcome personal struggles earlier in life, Mark was an active and passionate member of Minnesota’s recovery community. He spent more than two decades working tirelessly to support those fighting addiction, offering a listening ear, sharing his story, and providing hope when it was needed most. Mark’s humility and authenticity made him a beloved figure at countless recovery meetings, retreats, and outreach programs throughout the state.

“Mark had a way of making you feel like you mattered, no matter where you were in your journey,” said longtime friend and fellow recovery advocate John Peterson. “He never judged, never preached. He just walked alongside you.”

Over the years, Mark combined his passions by organizing fishing outings and nature retreats for those in recovery, creating spaces where healing could happen against the calming backdrop of Minnesota’s wild beauty. These trips became cherished lifelines for many, weaving together community, nature, and renewal in powerful ways.

Outside of his advocacy and angling, Mark was a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend. Family gatherings at the Schutz household were legendary, filled with laughter, storytelling, and, of course, fresh fish expertly prepared by Mark himself. His warmth, easy smile, and generous spirit endeared him to all who knew him.

Mark’s sudden passing has left a deep void in Duluth and beyond. Tributes have poured in from friends, family, colleagues, and countless individuals whose lives he touched. In his honor, community members are organizing a memorial fishing tournament and a recovery celebration later this summer — events that Mark would have loved, filled with camaraderie, remembrance, and hope.

“Mark never sought recognition,” said his sister, Annette Schutz. “He just wanted to make life better for the people around him. His kindness rippled outward in ways even he probably didn’t realize.”

As Duluth mourns this extraordinary man, his spirit lives on in the countless lives he lifted, the fish stories shared around campfires, and the quiet moments of recovery he helped make possible. In the cool mist rising off Lake Superior, and in the laughter of a first catch, the memory of Mark David Schutz will endure — a testament to a life lived with heart, humility, and boundless generosity.

Mark is survived by his mother, Lorraine Schutz; his siblings Annette (Schutz) Miller and Daniel Schutz; several nieces and nephews; and an entire community grateful for the gift of his life.

A celebration of life will be held on May 10, 2025, at Bayfront Park in Duluth. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Minnesota Recovery Connection or the Lake Superior Fishing Foundation in Mark’s memory.
