RUSTON, LA — A Community Shaken by Tragedy Outside Y2 Kuts Barbershop

What began as a heated family dispute at Mayfield Park escalated into unthinkable violence late Saturday night, sending shockwaves through the Ruston community. Just past 10 p.m., the tranquility of the evening was shattered as a flurry of gunfire erupted outside Y2 Kuts barbershop, leaving blood on the pavement and hearts broken in its wake.

The incident unfolded in front of stunned witnesses, many of whom were simply out enjoying their night or wrapping up their appointments at the local barbershop. Within moments, chaos took over—families screamed, some dropped to the ground, others ran for their lives. Police, who were already patrolling the area due to an earlier altercation at Mayfield Park, were quick to respond, rushing into the scene in an attempt to save those caught in the crossfire.

Thirty-year-old Deontrell Hunter was pronounced dead at the scene. A beloved member of the Ruston community, Deontrell’s death has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and neighbors. Known for his vibrant energy and love for his family, his life was tragically cut short by a few senseless moments of violence.

In addition to Deontrell, five others were injured and transported to nearby hospitals. Though their physical wounds are not life-threatening, the emotional scars run deep—not only for them but for a city now forced to grapple with yet another act of gun violence.

Police officials have confirmed that the confrontation stemmed from an earlier argument among individuals who were reportedly connected through family ties. That disagreement escalated quickly, culminating in the violence that left the sidewalk of a neighborhood barbershop stained in tragedy.

Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker addressed the public the following morning, expressing sorrow and concern:

“We are heartbroken. Our thoughts are with the families affected. We must come together as a community and confront the root causes of this violence. This isn’t just a police issue—it’s a community issue.”
