What set her apart was her relentless pursuit of justice through medicine. She believed deeply that healthcare was a human right, and she devoted her career to making that belief a reality—whether by launching community outreach initiatives, mentoring young healthcare professionals, or influencing policy at the state and federal levels.

Her commitment to mentoring the next generation of healthcare workers was particularly meaningful. She guided students, residents, and colleagues with kindness and rigor, always reminding them that the heart of medicine is human connection.

    A Life Remembered

Dr. Elopre’s passing is a profound loss not only to her family and colleagues at UAB, but also to the wider Birmingham community and to all those in public health and medicine who admired her passion, integrity, and unwavering spirit.

Tragic Loss in Highlandville: Off-Duty Deputy Mike Adams and Wife Ashley Killed in Head-On Crash

OZARK, Mo. – July 1, 2025 — A devastating head-on collision near Highlandville on Monday evening has claimed the lives of two cherished members of the Christian County community. Deputy Sheriff Michael E. Adams, 52, and his wife Ashley Adams, 45, were tragically killed when their vehicle was struck by a suspected impaired driver who had previously evaded law enforcement.

The crash occurred around 8:50 p.m. on Melton Road, according to a press release from the Christian County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). At the time, Deputy Adams was off duty and riding as a passenger in a vehicle being driven by his wife. Their four-month-old grandchild was also in the vehicle during the collision. The infant was transported to a nearby hospital and remains in serious but stable condition. The suspected impaired driver, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, which is leading the investigation.

Mike Adams was more than a law enforcement officer—he was a veteran, a mentor, a family man, and a trusted friend. Having proudly served in the United States Air Force, Adams continued his life of service by working with the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office before joining Christian County’s Patrol Division on November 7, 2022.

Sheriff Brad Cole of Christian County spoke with deep emotion about the tremendous loss, saying,

“Mike was one of those guys that no matter what the situation was, or he was asked to do, you could count on him. The loss of Deputy Adams and his wife is a profound tragedy for our agency and the entire community. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”

Ashley Adams, remembered for her warmth, kindness, and devotion to her family, was known throughout her community as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Together, Mike and Ashley shared a life of dedication—to their family, to public service, and to the values they held dear. Their love and partnership were evident to all who knew them.

The Christian County Sheriff’s Office is requesting privacy for the Adams family as they mourn this unimaginable loss. Plans for a memorial and funeral service for Deputy Adams will be announced in the coming days.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the broader law enforcement and local communities, where both Mike and Ashley were admired and respected. Candlelight vigils, community gatherings, and online tributes are already forming in remembrance of their lives and service.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest the driver who caused the fatal collision was fleeing law enforcement and may have been impaired at the time. No charges have been announced, but updates from the Missouri State Highway Patrol are expected as the investigation progresses.

In the face of such devastating loss, the community is rallying around the Adams family and especially the infant grandchild, whose recovery is being closely monitored. Donations, prayers, and messages of support continue to pour in from across Missouri and beyond.

As the community mourns, one thing remains clear: Deputy Mike Adams and Ashley Adams will not be forgotten. Their legacy of service, love, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all those they touched.

  • Tragedy in Ohio: Steel Magnate James Weller, Family, and Crew Killed in Devastating Plane Crash

Tragedy in Ohio: Steel Magnate James Weller, Family, and Crew Killed in Devastating Plane Crash

A tragic accident in Ohio has claimed the lives of James “Jim” Weller, 67, a prominent steel magnate and owner of Liberty Steel Industries Inc., along with five others, including members of his immediate family and flight crew. The Cessna twin-engine aircraft they were traveling in crashed just minutes after takeoff from Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport early Sunday morning, en route to a family vacation in Bozeman, Montana.

Also killed in the crash were James Weller’s wife, Veronica Weller, 68; their son, John Weller, 36; and daughter-in-law, Maria Weller, 34. The pilot, Joseph Maxin, 63, and co-pilot, Timothy Blake, 55, also lost their lives.

The plane went down around 7 a.m., barely seven minutes after takeoff, crashing approximately two miles west of the airport in a heavily wooded residential area in Howland Township. Miraculously, despite the aircraft slamming into a backyard, no homes were struck and there were no additional casualties on the ground—a small mercy amid such overwhelming loss.

Residents reported hearing a deafening boom that they initially mistook for a thunderstorm. “It sounded like a bomb,” said local resident Sarah Thompson. Another neighbor, Rachel Flowers, told reporters she was jolted awake by “two more pops that sounded like thunder.”

Emergency crews—including local fire departments, hazmat teams, air reserve fire services, and drone units—rushed to the crash site, though access was made difficult by thick forestation. Howland Township Fire Chief Raymond Pace called the tragedy the deadliest plane crash in the area’s history, adding, “That no homes were hit is a small miracle in a situation of such overwhelming heartbreak.”

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are currently investigating the cause of the crash. A preliminary report is expected later in July. The wreckage and debris field are being mapped with aerial drone surveys, and crews continue to monitor the site for fuel runoff or environmental hazards.

The Wellers were a respected and influential family in both the business and local community. James Weller, whose father founded Liberty Steel in 1965, expanded the company from a modest steel service center into a major regional supplier. He was also a beloved figure in motorsports, especially at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio. The Speedway released a statement mourning the family’s loss, recalling James as a 36-time Big Block Modified winner and a two-time track champion. His late father, Jim Weller Sr., had co-owned Sharon Speedway from 2002 to 2024.

Pilot Joseph Maxin, known for his long career flying Challenger 300 and Learjet 45 aircraft, was also a former assistant prosecutor with the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office. Aviation consultant Mike Hillman told reporters, “These were the best of the best… I’d give anything to rewind the day and take them to breakfast instead.”

As the community reels from this tragedy, many are left grieving the loss of an entire family unit and the seasoned professionals who served alongside them. A cloud of mourning now hangs over the tight-knit communities in Ohio and Pennsylvania, where the Weller family’s generosity, leadership, and legacy will never be forgotten.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. In the meantime, tributes have poured in across social media and from organizations connected to the Wellers, as friends, colleagues, and community members struggle to comprehend the sudden, devastating loss.

The NTSB continues to collect evidence and analyze flight data to determine what went wrong during the flight’s final minutes. Until then, loved ones and the public wait for answers, holding onto memories and honoring the lives of six individuals who were taken far too soon.
