Chicago Lifeguard Charles Leto Arrested After Fatally Shooting 15-Year-Old Marjay Dotson, Critically Injuring 14-Year-Old Jeremy Herred

CHICAGO, IL — A horrifying act of violence unfolded Thursday evening at Douglass Park in Chicago, where a lifeguard opened fire on two teenagers near a public pool, leaving one dead and another critically wounded. Police have arrested 55-year-old Charles Leto, a lifeguard with the Chicago Park District, who now faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder.

The shooting took place shortly after 7:00 p.m.—moments after the pool had closed for the day. According to investigators, Marjay Dotson, 15, and Jeremy Herred, 14, were near the basketball courts and pool area when Leto suddenly pulled out a handgun and began firing.

Witnesses say Leto had been fixing a bicycle shortly before the incident. Without warning or clear provocation, he allegedly drew a weapon and shot both boys. The motive remains under investigation, and authorities have yet to determine what led to this shocking act.

Marjay Dotson was struck in the back by gunfire. He was transported to a hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. Family and friends describe Marjay as a joyful teen with big dreams—someone who lit up every room he entered and had plans for a bright future.

Jeremy Herred, who was hit in the neck, survived emergency surgery and remains in critical condition in the ICU. His family says he is fighting hard and has shown remarkable resilience. They’ve asked for continued prayers and support from the community.

Charles Leto was arrested at the scene by responding officers. The Chicago Police Department confirmed that he acted alone, and no other suspects are being sought. They are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether there had been any prior interactions between Leto and the teens.

The Chicago Park District released a statement following the arrest:

“We are shocked and heartbroken by the incident at Douglass Park. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and extend our deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragedy.”

The North Lawndale community is mourning the senseless loss of Marjay Dotson and praying for Jeremy Herred’s recovery. A growing memorial near the park—filled with flowers, candles, and heartfelt notes—serves as a symbol of grief and unity.

As the investigation continues, many are calling for greater oversight of public employees and a renewed focus on ensuring safety at community spaces where children gather.

Anyone with additional information is urged to contact Chicago Police at (312) 746-6000.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Community Mourns After Danny Estis, 62, Killed in South LA Hit-and-Run; Police Urgently Seeking Driver

A tragic hit-and-run collision in South Los Angeles has left a family grieving and a community demanding justice after 62-year-old Danny Estis was fatally struck while crossing a street late Friday night. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed that Estis was hit around 9:15 p.m. on June 28, 2025, near the intersection of Western Avenue and 83rd Street, just south of Manchester Square.

Authorities say Estis was not in a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a speeding vehicle traveling northbound on Western Avenue. Instead of stopping to render aid, the driver fled the scene, leaving Estis lying on the pavement with severe injuries. Paramedics arrived moments later and attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

    A Life Taken Too Soon

Danny Estis was more than a statistic—he was a beloved member of his South LA neighborhood. Friends and family describe him as a kind, quiet soul who lived a life of humility and warmth. Known by many in the area for his daily walks and familiar smile, his presence will be sorely missed.

“He didn’t bother anyone,” said a local resident who knew Danny. “He always greeted people and was just part of the fabric of this neighborhood. To be left like that in the street is just heartbreaking.”

Loved ones have begun to place candles and flowers near the site of the crash, creating a growing memorial to honor his memory and call attention to the ongoing dangers pedestrians face in the city.

    LAPD’s Ongoing Investigation

LAPD South Traffic Division is leading the investigation and has asked for the public’s assistance in locating the driver. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses is currently under review, and investigators are hoping that someone who witnessed the incident will come forward.

“We are urging anyone who saw something—no matter how small—to come forward,” said LAPD spokesperson Sgt. Mark Cruz. “We owe it to Mr. Estis and his grieving family to find the individual responsible and hold them accountable.”

Police believe the suspect vehicle may have sustained front-end damage and are urging local repair shops and body shops to be on alert for suspicious repair requests.

A Broader Concern in South LA

This incident marks yet another tragedy in a series of hit-and-run crashes in the area, a growing issue that residents say reflects a dangerous lack of traffic enforcement and infrastructure for pedestrian safety.

According to city data, South Los Angeles continues to be one of the most dangerous places for pedestrians in the city, particularly during nighttime hours. Advocates are renewing their calls for better lighting, more crosswalks, speed enforcement, and traffic-calming measures in neighborhoods where incidents like this are all too common.

    How You Can Help

Anyone with information about the crash or the identity of the driver is urged to contact LAPD’s South Traffic Division at (323) 421-2500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. Anonymous tips can also be submitted

In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched by Estis’ family to assist with funeral expenses and to support awareness initiatives for safer streets.

    Remembering Danny Estis

Danny’s death is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the urgency with which our communities must respond to prevent future tragedies. As the search for justice continues, those who knew and loved Danny hold onto the memories of his kindness, his steady presence, and the simple joy he brought to those around him.

May his life be honored not just through mourning, but through action. Rest in peace, Danny Estis.
