Visalia Police Seek Public’s Help in Fatal Hit-and-Run Investigation

The Visalia Police Department is reaching out to the public for assistance in a tragic and ongoing investigation following a fatal hit-and-run collision that claimed the life of a local bicyclist. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to bring justice to the victim and his family.

On the evening of Saturday, May 3, 2025, at approximately 9:45 p.m., Visalia police officers were dispatched to the scene of a collision on southbound Akers Street, just south of Judy Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered that a 53-year-old male bicyclist had been struck by a vehicle that fled the scene without stopping to render aid or notify authorities.

Emergency medical personnel responded promptly, and the victim was transported to Kaweah Health Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of medical staff, the man succumbed to his injuries the following morning, marking a heartbreaking end to a preventable tragedy.

According to witness statements and preliminary evidence, the suspect vehicle is believed to be a white Ford F-150 pickup truck, model year 2018 to 2020. The vehicle likely sustained front-end damage and may be missing parts or have visible signs of the impact. Investigators are analyzing all leads, but they stress that community assistance is critical in locating the vehicle and identifying the driver responsible.

The Visalia Police Department’s Traffic Unit has taken the lead on the case and is actively reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and residences. However, they acknowledge that even small tips from the public could make a significant difference.

Officer Derek Neece, who is heading the investigation, is urging anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident or who may have dashcam footage, security camera recordings, or cell phone video to come forward. In addition, residents or businesses located along Akers Street and surrounding neighborhoods are asked to review any footage from that evening that might provide new leads.

“This was a senseless act that has taken a life and left a family devastated,” Officer Neece stated. “We’re asking our community to stand together and help us find the person responsible so we can provide some closure to the victim’s loved ones.”

Those with information—no matter how minor it may seem—are encouraged to contact Officer Derek Neece at 559-713-4037. Callers can remain anonymous if preferred.

The Visalia Police Department extends its condolences to the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time and remains committed to pursuing every available lead until justice is served.

Tragic High-Speed Motorcycle Crash in Glens Falls Claims Two Lives; NY State Police Investigating

Glens Falls, NY – A devastating motorcycle crash in the early morning hours of Saturday has left two people dead and launched an active investigation by the New York State Police. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 12:20 a.m. at the intersection of Bacon Street and Glen Street in Glens Falls, following an attempted traffic stop in nearby Queensbury that ended in tragedy.

According to officials, the motorcyclist—identified as Alex Morehouse, 38, of Warrensburg—was operating a high-performance sportbike at a high rate of speed when New York State Troopers attempted to pull him over for a traffic violation. Riding as a passenger was Suzie Etu, 38, of South Glens Falls. The couple failed to comply with the troopers’ attempt to initiate a traffic stop and fled the area, triggering a brief pursuit.

State Police report that they disengaged from the pursuit shortly after it began, citing safety concerns due to the motorcycle’s extreme speed and the high-risk nature of pursuing a two-wheeled vehicle through a residential area. Unfortunately, moments later, the motorcycle collided with a vehicle at the intersection of Bacon and Glen Streets—a busy area known for its cross-traffic and limited nighttime visibility.

The impact of the crash was catastrophic. Both Morehouse and Etu were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, who has not been publicly identified, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Glens Falls Hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Authorities have confirmed that neither rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The motorcycle, described as a powerful sportbike built for speed, was almost entirely destroyed in the collision. Debris was scattered across the intersection, prompting road closures for several hours as investigators and crash reconstruction teams worked through the scene.

As of Saturday afternoon, the New York State Police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances leading up to the fatal crash. Investigators are reviewing dashcam footage, interviewing witnesses, and examining forensic evidence from the site. The vehicle’s black box data, if available, will also be used to determine the exact speed and events leading to the collision.

Community members have expressed shock and grief over the tragic loss. Friends of both Morehouse and Etu described them as adventurous and passionate individuals. “Alex loved motorcycles. He was always about speed and thrill,” said one acquaintance. “But no one thought it would end like this.” Suzie Etu, a mother of two, is being remembered for her vibrant personality and dedication to her family.

The incident has reignited discussions about high-speed pursuits and motorcycle safety in the region. Local officials are emphasizing the importance of helmet use and the inherent dangers of fleeing from law enforcement. “This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly things can turn tragic when vehicles are operated at high speeds, especially when law enforcement procedures are ignored,” said one local police spokesperson.

The intersection of Bacon and Glen Streets has since been reopened, but residents remain on edge, grappling with the sudden loss of life and the haunting nature of the scene. As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the pursuit or the crash to come forward with information.

Further updates will be provided as more details become available. Funeral arrangements for the victims have not yet been announced.

  • In Loving Memory of John Mitchell: A Gentleman, A Leader

In Loving Memory of John Mitchell: A Gentleman, A Leader

I was very saddened to learn of the sudden passing of a good friend, former Republican Bergen County Freeholder and recent leader in the international Rotary organization, John Mitchell. His departure is a significant loss to so many of us whose lives he touched with his integrity, warmth, and unwavering commitment to service.

John was more than just a colleague; he was a true gentleman, through and through. I have so many fond memories of this outstanding man, and I’m grateful to have known and worked alongside someone of such exceptional character. His ability to lead with both heart and principle made him an extraordinary public servant, and his quiet strength made him a friend you could always count on.

One of my earliest and most vivid memories of John goes back to his time as the Freeholder Budget Chair in 2012. At the time, he expressed serious concerns about the funding allocations for the county’s Department of Human Services. John was never one to rubber-stamp anything; he held a high standard of fiscal accountability and took his responsibilities seriously. Recognizing this, we arranged a private meeting with our senior Human Services leadership team, where we had an open, honest, and transparent discussion about our programs, priorities, and the vulnerable populations we serve.

That meeting stands out not only because of the depth of the conversation, but because of the way John approached it. He came in skeptical, yes—but also curious and willing to listen. By the end of the discussion, he had a far clearer understanding of the vital role our department played. What’s more, he emerged as one of our strongest supporters. That transformation wasn’t due to persuasion or politics—it was due to John’s deep commitment to doing what was right. He cared about the truth, about the people behind the numbers, and about ensuring that government worked for those who needed it most.

That moment truly encapsulated the kind of man John was: thoughtful, principled, and humble enough to grow. His insistence on transparency wasn’t about scoring points—it was rooted in a genuine desire to uphold integrity in public service. He held himself to a high standard, and he expected the same from others—not out of judgment, but out of a sincere belief in good governance.

Over the years, our professional paths continued to cross, and our friendship only deepened. John remained a steadfast presence, both in government and in the broader Bergen County community. As a public official, he led with clarity and compassion. As a private citizen, he was a beloved community figure—never one to seek the spotlight, but always willing to lend a hand, a listening ear, or a word of encouragement.

John Mitchell was an honorable man, a kind leader, and a great soul. He embodied the values of service, accountability, and empathy. Whether working on county initiatives or representing his community through the Rotary, John demonstrated what it means to serve with both competence and compassion. He was the kind of leader we need more of—measured, wise, and deeply human.

Personally, I had great admiration for him. His friendship meant a great deal to me, and I will miss his presence, his counsel, and his steady encouragement. He gave so much to Bergen County, and his legacy lives on not just in the policies he shaped, but in the people he inspired. He had a way of bringing out the best in everyone around him.

It was easy to respect John Mitchell. He was the real deal—authentic in his heart, mind, and actions. We’ve lost a remarkable man, but we hold onto the example he set, the values he lived by, and the memories we shared.

Rest well, John. Your service, your friendship, and your goodness will not be forgotten.

  • Five Years After Grisly Discovery in Bay County, Michigan, Inmate Admits Role in Covering Up Shocking Murder

Five Years After Grisly Discovery in Bay County, Michigan, Inmate Admits Role in Covering Up Shocking Murder

Bay County, MI — May 5, 2025 — Nearly five years after the burned remains of a woman were discovered behind an abandoned schoolhouse in rural Bay County, Michigan, a long-awaited development in the chilling case has brought new clarity to a crime that rattled the quiet community of Bay City. On Monday, Aaron M. Wyse, a 47-year-old inmate currently incarcerated on unrelated charges, pleaded guilty to assisting in the disposal of the body of a woman who had been brutally murdered — a mother of five whose violent death continues to haunt her loved ones.

Wyse’s admission, made in a Bay County courtroom, marks a significant turning point in a case that has remained partially unresolved since the shocking discovery on a frigid October morning in 2020. Hunters passing through the wooded property behind the long-abandoned schoolhouse stumbled upon the charred remains of a human body. The discovery ignited a sprawling investigation that would eventually uncover a harrowing story of violence, betrayal, and concealment.

The victim, whose identity was later confirmed through forensic analysis and dental records, was a 35-year-old woman from nearby Saginaw. A mother to five young children, she had been reported missing several days before her body was found. The brutal nature of her death — followed by a deliberate attempt to burn and hide her remains — sent shockwaves through Bay County, a region unaccustomed to such grisly crimes.

Though investigators had made progress over the years, charging a suspect believed to be directly responsible for the woman’s murder, lingering questions remained about how the body ended up at the remote location and who might have helped cover up the crime. Those questions were at least partially answered with Wyse’s guilty plea.

In court, Wyse admitted to knowingly helping dispose of the woman’s body after the murder had taken place. Though he has not been charged with the killing itself, prosecutors say his involvement was critical in attempting to hinder the investigation and deny the victim’s family a chance at closure for years. According to statements made by the prosecution, Wyse assisted in transporting the body to the rural location and setting it on fire in an effort to destroy evidence.

The case file, previously sealed in part due to the sensitive and ongoing nature of the investigation, revealed that Wyse was an associate of the primary suspect — a man who had been in a volatile relationship with the victim. Prosecutors allege that the murder occurred during a domestic dispute that escalated into violence. After the killing, Wyse was called upon to help eliminate any trace of the crime, a task he carried out with disturbing efficiency.

Wyse’s decision to come forward after five years was reportedly influenced by a combination of legal strategy and personal motivation, though neither he nor his attorney offered detailed commentary after the court hearing. However, sources close to the case suggest that Wyse may have struck a deal in exchange for a reduced sentence related to his role in the cover-up, though this has not yet been confirmed by the court.

The family of the victim was present at the hearing, many of them in tears as they listened to Wyse admit his role in denying them justice for so long. A family spokesperson told reporters outside the courtroom that while the plea was a step toward healing, it would never undo the loss they’ve suffered.

“We’ve waited for years to hear the truth,” the spokesperson said. “Nothing can bring her back, but at least we know someone is being held accountable for helping to hide what happened to her. She didn’t deserve this.”

The case, which had remained one of Bay County’s most disturbing cold cases until recent developments, now moves closer to final resolution. Prosecutors say they are continuing to investigate whether any additional individuals were involved in the crime or its aftermath.

Wyse is expected to be sentenced later this year. Legal experts suggest that while his current prison term may be extended, the full details of his cooperation and plea agreement could influence the final sentence.

As the legal proceedings continue, the community remains shaken but hopeful that justice — delayed for half a decade — is finally within reach.

  • Remembering Dan “Danny” Cortez: A Life Cut Tragically Short

Remembering Dan “Danny” Cortez: A Life Cut Tragically Short

I was extremely saddened to learn that my high school classmate, Dan Cortez, passed away in this weekend’s tragic accident near Center Point. The news struck me like a lightning bolt — the kind of grief that takes a moment to settle in because your heart refuses to believe it. Dan — or “Danny,” as many of us affectionately called him — was one of the kindest souls I had the privilege of knowing during our time at Tivy High School.

Danny wasn’t just a classmate; he was a familiar and friendly face during some of the most formative years of my life. We were in the same driver’s education class our sophomore year, back in 1983. I remember those days vividly — when learning to parallel park was a rite of passage and driving down Highway 16 toward Fredericksburg felt like the start of a great adventure. One day, while taking turns behind the wheel, a sudden and severe storm forced us to turn around and call it a day. I’ll never forget the nervous laughter, the shared glances in the rearview mirror, and the quiet relief of making it back safely. Those moments seem so small in the grand scheme of life, but now they feel immeasurable.

Our seating in classes often placed us near each other — I was the last of the B’s, and he was the first of the C’s. That little alphabetical coincidence meant we ended up side by side in several classrooms over the years. Danny was always easy to talk to. He had a calm demeanor, a warm smile, and the kind of genuine kindness that’s hard to come by, even back then.

In more recent years, we occasionally chatted — usually about the weather or local news. Nothing too deep, but just enough to rekindle that sense of familiarity that made him feel like an old friend, even when life had taken us in different directions.

That’s why this loss cuts so deeply. Danny wasn’t just a classmate. He was a good man, a devoted family member, and a gentle soul who didn’t deserve the cruel fate he met. It breaks my heart that this happened to such a good family — and what makes it worse is the senselessness of it all. His death, along with two others, was the result of intoxication manslaughter. Three lives lost — unnecessarily, tragically — because of one person’s reckless decision.

This shouldn’t have happened. Danny should still be here — living his life, laughing with his loved ones, and making memories that now will never be. It sickens me that this kind of tragedy still occurs, leaving families shattered and communities grieving.

To Danny, thank you for being a bright spot in my high school memories. Thank you for your kindness, your quiet presence, and the simple friendship we shared. You will be missed more than words can express.

Rest in peace, my friend. May your memory be a blessing, and may your loved ones find comfort in the outpouring of love from those of us who remember you so fondly.

  • Tragedy Strikes McComb, Mississippi: 17-Year-Old Charged with First-Degree Murder After Fatal Shooting at Party

Tragedy Strikes McComb, Mississippi: 17-Year-Old Charged with First-Degree Murder After Fatal Shooting at Party

The small, close-knit community of McComb, Mississippi, is reeling after a tragic incident over the weekend that left one teenager dead and another behind bars. The shooting, which occurred at a party, has sparked grief and disbelief among residents, who are grappling with the devastating loss of a young life and the potential long-term impact on the local community.

    The Incident

The shooting took place late Saturday evening during a gathering that was supposed to be a celebration but instead turned into a nightmare. Authorities say the event quickly escalated into violence, resulting in the death of 17-year-old Gary Thompson. According to the McComb Police Department, Thompson was shot during an altercation at the party, which was held at an undisclosed location. The situation spiraled out of control, and Thompson was fatally injured.

Responding officers arrived at the scene shortly after the gunshot rang out. They found Thompson suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save him, Thompson was pronounced dead shortly afterward. His family and friends are now left to mourn his tragic death, and the McComb community is grappling with the senseless loss.

    The Arrest and Charge

The suspect in the shooting, identified as 17-year-old Kendric Cowart, Jr., has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Cowart, a local teenager, is currently being held at the Pike County Detention Center while awaiting further legal proceedings. The case has shocked many in McComb, as it involves young people whose futures were cut short due to a violent confrontation.

Assistant Police Chief Earnest Perry confirmed Cowart’s arrest and the serious charges against him. “We are devastated by the events that unfolded over the weekend,” Perry said. “This is a tragic situation, and our hearts go out to the family of the victim. At this point, the investigation continues as we piece together what led to this terrible incident.” Perry also emphasized that Cowart would be charged as an adult, which is common in cases involving serious crimes such as murder.

While the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, authorities believe the altercation may have been fueled by a disagreement or confrontation at the party. Details are still emerging as law enforcement continues to interview witnesses and collect evidence. However, the emotional toll of the event is already evident in McComb.

    Community Reaction

McComb, located in Pike County in southwest Mississippi, is a small town with a population of just under 13,000 people. Known for its rich history and strong sense of community, McComb has been rocked by the news of this shooting. Residents are struggling to come to terms with the fact that two teenagers—both part of the same community—are at the center of such a violent act.

Many have expressed shock and disbelief that something so tragic could happen in their hometown. “It’s just unbelievable. These were kids. We all know them,” said one local resident, who asked to remain anonymous. “McComb is a small town. We don’t see things like this happen here. This hurts. It’s a real blow to the community.”

The local school district, where both Thompson and Cowart attended, has been impacted by the tragedy. Both teens were part of the high school community, and their deaths have left a lasting imprint on classmates, teachers, and staff. School officials have offered counseling services to students who may be struggling with the grief and shock of the loss. “We are heartbroken for the families involved and are doing everything we can to support our students through this difficult time,” said the superintendent of McComb School District in a statement.

For Thompson’s family, the pain is unimaginable. A mother’s heartbreak is compounded by the sudden, violent loss of a child. Family members have shared their shock and sorrow on social media, expressing their disbelief that their loved one was taken so suddenly. “Gary was a bright young man with so much ahead of him. He didn’t deserve this,” said a family member, speaking on behalf of Thompson’s parents.

Cowart’s family has also been left in a state of grief. Friends and family members have expressed their concern for the young man who has now been charged with such a serious crime. “This is not the kid we raised,” said one relative, who spoke out to offer a different perspective on the teenager’s background. “We’re just as shocked as anyone. We are praying for both families.”

A Broader Issue: Gun Violence in America’s Youth

The shooting in McComb is just one example of a broader issue plaguing communities across the country: the alarming rise in youth gun violence. Across America, tragic shootings involving teenagers have become far too common. In 2023 alone, hundreds of young people have been involved in violent incidents, whether as victims or perpetrators. Many of these shootings occur at parties, where alcohol and emotions can cloud judgment, leading to violence that often spirals out of control.

In McComb, as in many small towns, such events are not just news stories—they are personal. Local leaders and citizens are now grappling with how to address the root causes of such violence and prevent future tragedies from occurring. Conversations about gun control, community outreach, and mental health resources are likely to dominate local discourse in the aftermath of this shooting.

    The Road Ahead for McComb

As the investigation continues, the McComb community is left to pick up the pieces. Funeral arrangements for Thompson are being made, and his family is preparing for the difficult task of laying their son to rest. Cowart, meanwhile, faces the legal consequences of his actions, and his future is uncertain.

The tragedy has sparked broader conversations in McComb about the need for greater intervention in the lives of local youth. Church leaders, educators, and community activists have all called for stronger efforts to prevent youth violence, emphasizing the importance of supporting teenagers before they turn to violence as a solution to their problems.

“This is a wake-up call for all of us,” said Pastor Michael Davis of McComb’s First Baptist Church. “We have to do more to protect our young people, to guide them, and to make sure that they know there are better ways to resolve conflicts than picking up a gun.”

McComb, like many communities across the United States, must now grapple with the deep emotional wounds left by this senseless tragedy. But with the support of the broader community, there is hope that healing and change can begin. As McComb reflects on the loss of one of its own, the hope is that this tragic event can serve as a catalyst for real change and, ultimately, a safer future for all.

His passion for life extended beyond his personal relationships; he was also deeply involved in his local community, known for his active participation in local organizations and his efforts to make his neighborhood a better place.

In his free time, McGraw found joy in the open road, riding his motorcycle through the winding highways and backroads of New Jersey. It was a pastime that not only provided him with a sense of freedom and peace but also allowed him to connect with fellow riders who shared his love for the road. It was on one such ride, however, that tragedy struck.
