In Loving Memory of Ryan Ponick

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Warhawk Family announces the passing of one of its most beloved members, Ryan Ponick. A former team captain, cherished teammate, and dear friend, Ryan’s vibrant spirit, dedication to the game, and unwavering loyalty to Warhawk Football left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Ryan was the embodiment of what it means to be a Warhawk. From the moment he first stepped onto the field, his passion was evident — not just for the game itself, but for his brothers beside him. He played with heart, with honor, and with an intensity that inspired those around him to push harder, aim higher, and believe in the power of teamwork. His leadership was not defined solely by the plays he made or the games he won, but by the way he carried himself — with humility, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to something bigger than himself.

As a team captain, Ryan was a true guiding force. He led not through words alone, but through action, demonstrating daily what it meant to dedicate oneself completely to a cause, a goal, and a family. His presence in the locker room was one of encouragement and unity. On and off the field, he was a mentor, a motivator, and most importantly, a friend. Ryan’s teammates, coaches, and the wider Warhawk community admired his grit, respected his perseverance, and cherished his relentless positivity.

Beyond his athleticism, Ryan will be remembered for the kindness and warmth he extended to everyone he met. He was the first to celebrate a teammate’s success and the first to lift someone up in times of struggle. His smile could light up the darkest moments, and his genuine compassion left a lasting impression on countless lives.

Ryan’s legacy stretches far beyond the football field. It lives in the memories shared in quiet moments after practice, the bonds formed through adversity and triumph, and the lessons of resilience and heart that he taught by example. His impact will continue to resonate within the Warhawk Family for generations to come.

Today, as we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the incredible life he lived — a life full of passion, loyalty, and love. Ryan Ponick showed us what it means to be dedicated not just to a team, but to a family. His memory will forever be a part of who we are.

We extend our deepest condolences to Ryan’s family, friends, and all who were touched by his extraordinary spirit. The Warhawk Family grieves with you, and we will honor Ryan’s legacy by carrying forward the values he so deeply exemplified.

Tragedy Strikes East Montgomery: Woman Identified in Fatal Shooting

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A quiet Sunday evening on Montgomery’s east side was shattered by gunfire, plunging a normally peaceful neighborhood into mourning. Montgomery police have confirmed they are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a woman, now identified as 41-year-old Kalynthia Mitchell.

According to authorities, officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Eastdale Road South shortly before 7 p.m. on Sunday following reports of shots fired in the area. Upon arrival, they found Mitchell suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel rendered aid at the scene before rushing her to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The Montgomery Police Department (MPD) has since launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. As of Monday morning, no arrests have been made, and investigators have not publicly identified any suspects or discussed possible motives. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that tips — even anonymous ones — could be critical in solving the case.

“This was a senseless act of violence that took the life of a beloved member of our community,” said Montgomery Police Chief Darryl J. Albert in a statement released late Sunday. “Our detectives are working tirelessly to piece together what happened and bring justice to Kalynthia’s family.”

Family members and friends described Mitchell as a vibrant, caring woman who was deeply loved by those who knew her. According to neighbors, she had lived in the area for several years and was known for her kindness and willingness to lend a helping hand.

“She didn’t deserve this,” said neighbor Tonya Wright, who fought back tears while speaking about the tragedy. “Kalynthia was the type of person who would check on you if she hadn’t seen you in a while. She was more than a neighbor — she was a friend.”

The east side of Montgomery, while not immune to crime, is generally considered a quieter part of the city, making the incident all the more shocking for residents. Many expressed feelings of unease following the shooting, noting that the violence seemed out of place for their close-knit community.

City officials responded swiftly to the news, with Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed expressing condolences to the Mitchell family and condemning the violence. “The loss of life due to gun violence is a tragedy that reverberates throughout our entire city,” Reed said in a statement. “We remain committed to working alongside law enforcement and community leaders to ensure Montgomery is a safer place for all.”

This latest shooting underscores a troubling trend of rising violence that cities across the country, including Montgomery, have been grappling with in recent years. Local advocacy groups have reiterated calls for stronger community engagement, better access to conflict resolution programs, and initiatives aimed at curbing gun violence.

Meanwhile, Montgomery police continue to canvass the area, review surveillance footage, and interview witnesses in the hopes of gaining more information. They have asked anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual Sunday evening to contact MPD at 334-625-2831 or CrimeStoppers at 334-215-STOP.

As the investigation unfolds, Kalynthia Mitchell’s loved ones are left searching for answers — and grappling with the sudden and devastating void left by her death.

“She was full of life, and now she’s gone,” said her cousin, Angela Mitchell. “We just want justice for Kalynthia. We want whoever did this to be held accountable.”

A vigil is being planned later this week to honor Mitchell’s life and legacy, with community members expected to gather to mourn, reflect, and call for peace.

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we share the devastating news that our friend, colleague, and one of the newest and most vibrant additions to the SMR faculty, Joshua Clover, has passed away. His sudden departure has left a void that words can scarcely fill — a tremendous loss not only to those of us who were fortunate enough to know him personally but to the broader community of thinkers, writers, and activists who found inspiration, challenge, and hope in his work.

Joshua was a force — brilliant, uncompromising, and deeply committed to the life of the mind and the demands of justice. From the moment he joined SMR, he brought with him a rare energy, a passionate intellect, and a generosity of spirit that quickly made him an integral part of our community. Whether he was leading a seminar, mentoring students, collaborating with colleagues, or speaking at public forums, Joshua engaged the world with a clarity of thought and a moral urgency that reminded us all of the deeper purposes of education and public life.

His scholarship was dazzling in its scope and its depth. Joshua refused to separate theory from action, ideas from lived realities. He wrote and spoke with an elegance and precision that illuminated the tangled intersections of politics, culture, economics, and art. But it was not just his intellect that drew people to him — it was his relentless commitment to justice, his willingness to stand alongside the marginalized, and his belief that the university must not be a refuge from the world’s injustices but a site of resistance against them.

To those of us who had the privilege to work alongside him, Joshua was more than a brilliant mind. He was a friend — warm, generous, funny, and fiercely loyal. His wit could slice through pretense in an instant, yet he was always compassionate, always attentive to the struggles and aspirations of those around him. In the classroom, he inspired a new generation of students to think critically, to act courageously, and to imagine new futures. His mentorship was profound, often transformative.

The suddenness of his departure reminds us of the fragility of life and the enduring power of a life lived with purpose. Though Joshua’s time with us was far too short, his impact will endure. His writings, his teachings, his example — these will continue to challenge and inspire us for years to come. He has left an indelible mark on all who knew him and on the world he sought so passionately to change.

As we mourn his loss, we also commit ourselves to honoring his legacy. May we continue the work he so fearlessly advanced. May we hold fast to the truths he illuminated and the struggles he joined. May we keep alive the memory of his brilliance, his courage, and his compassion.

Joshua Clover’s name and work must never be forgotten. In our grief, we find a deeper resolve: to carry forward his vision of a more just, more humane world — a world he believed was not only necessary but possible.

Rest in power, Joshua. You are deeply missed and will be forever remembered.

The tragic events surrounding the Lo family have cast a somber shadow over Vancouver in recent years. The untimely death of Alexander Lo in 2024 and the subsequent Lapu Lapu Day tragedy in 2025, involving his brother Kai-Ji Adam Lo, have deeply affected the community.

    In Memoriam: Alexander Lo (1992–2024)

Alexander Lo, a 31-year-old resident of Vancouver, was found deceased in his East Vancouver home near Knight Street and East 33rd Avenue on January 28, 2024. The Vancouver Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call around 1 a.m., discovering both Lo’s body and the suspect at the scene. Dwight William Kematch, 39, was arrested and later charged with second-degree murder in connection with Lo’s death.

Kematch pleaded not guilty, and a preliminary hearing commenced in October 2024 to determine if sufficient evidence existed to proceed to trial. The case remains under investigation by the Vancouver Police Department’s homicide unit.

The Lapu Lapu Day Tragedy: April 26, 2025

On April 26, 2025, during the Lapu Lapu Day Filipino street festival in Vancouver, a devastating incident occurred. Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30, allegedly drove his SUV into a crowd of festival-goers, resulting in 11 fatalities, including a 5-year-old child, and injuring over two dozen others. Bystanders detained Lo at the scene until police arrived.

Lo has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder, with additional charges anticipated as the investigation continues. Authorities have ruled out terrorism as a motive, noting Lo’s history of mental health issues and prior interactions with law enforcement. Family members had reportedly sought psychiatric help for him just hours before the attack.

The tragedy has been described as Vancouver’s “darkest day,” prompting national mourning and a reevaluation of public event safety measures.

    A Family’s Struggle

The Lo family has endured profound hardships. Following Alexander’s death in January 2024, Kai-Ji organized an online fundraiser to cover funeral expenses, raising over $9,000. In August 2024, their mother attempted suicide, further compounding the family’s grief. These events, coupled with Kai-Ji’s mental health challenges, paint a picture of a family in crisis.

    Legal Proceedings

Dwight William Kematch remains in custody, with his trial pending following the preliminary hearing in October 2024.

Kai-Ji Adam Lo is also in custody, having not requested bail during his court appearance on April 27, 2025. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment.
