It is with great sorrow and profound respect that we honor the life and legacy of Professor Gordon Jones, a visionary in the world of horse racing and education, who passed away on April 18, 2025, just four days after celebrating his 95th birthday. Widely regarded as a pioneer in speed and pace handicapping, Jones’s innovative approaches transformed the landscape of horse racing analysis and education.

His academic career was marked by a commitment to excellence and a passion for mentoring students, many of whom went on to make significant contributions in their respective fields.

Jones’s influence extended beyond academia into the realm of horse racing journalism. As a turf writer and handicapper for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, he brought insightful analysis and a deep understanding of the sport to a broad audience. His best-selling book, Gordon Jones to Win (1976), introduced innovative concepts in speed and pace handicapping, laying the groundwork for modern analytical approaches in the sport.
