As they engaged with the suspect outside, two officers were wounded, and the suspect was fatally shot. One officer has since been released from the hospital, while the other remains in stable condition.

    Authorities have not publicly released the names of the victims, suspect, or the injured officers, pending family notifications. The motive behind the shooting is currently under investigation.

    Elkhart Police Chief Dan Milanese expressed the community’s grief, stating, “In this horrific situation, words cannot express the pain felt in our community when a tragic incident like this happens.

The accident occurred around 9:00 a.m. at the intersection of Willard Avenue and Greenlawn Avenue, involving three vehicles and resulting in four fatalities and one minor injury .​

    Among the victims were 17-year-old Gabriela Difo, a senior at Newington High School; her mother, Florinda Tineo; and her aunt, Jeannette Tineo . The identity of the fourth victim has not been publicly released. Gabriela’s younger sister, Grace Difo, a junior at Newington High School, and Jayriel Garcia, a freshman and son of Jeannette Tineo, were not involved in the crash but are grieving the loss of their loved ones .​

    In response to the tragedy, Newington Public Schools have mobilized crisis support teams to assist students and staff. Superintendent Maureen Brummett and Principal Terra Tigno have expressed their condolences and are working closely with the affected families to provide necessary support .​

He received an honorable discharge in 1970, marking the end of his military service but not his commitment to serving others.

    Following his military service, Dan relocated to California, where he spent several decades building a life rooted in hard work, integrity, and community involvement. In 2019, he moved to Wichita, Kansas, to be closer to family and to embrace a new chapter in his life.

    Dan’s life was characterized by quiet strength and a steadfast commitment to his loved ones and fellow veterans. His humility and generosity left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He faced health challenges, including congestive heart failure, with resilience and grace, never allowing them to diminish his spirit.
