Tragedy in Oildale: Couple Identified in Apparent Murder-Suicide in Kern County

Bakersfield, Calif. — May 30, 2025-A quiet Oildale neighborhood was the scene of a deeply tragic discovery earlier this week, as authorities confirmed that two people found dead in a home on Park Meadows Drive were the victims of an apparent murder-suicide. The Kern County Coroner’s Office has now publicly identified the deceased as 31-year-old Jasmine Hernandez Ascencio and 25-year-old Joshua Anthony Reveles, both residents of Bakersfield.

According to the coroner’s report, deputies responded to the residence in the 2600 block of Park Meadows Drive on May 26, 2025, at approximately 9:41 a.m., after receiving a report of a possible disturbance or welfare check. Upon arrival, responding deputies from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office made the grim discovery of two individuals unresponsive inside the home.

Medical personnel were immediately summoned to the scene, but both Ascencio and Reveles were pronounced dead shortly after authorities entered the residence. The early stages of the investigation, coupled with forensic findings, led detectives to conclude that the incident was a murder-suicide, with Reveles allegedly fatally shooting Ascencio before turning the weapon on himself.

    Victims Identified, Community in Mourning

The identities of the couple were withheld initially pending notification of their next of kin. On Friday, the Kern County Coroner’s Office released an official statement confirming their names and ages. While the coroner has not released detailed autopsy findings, law enforcement officials have stated that both victims died from gunshot wounds.

The news of the tragedy has rippled across the Bakersfield and Oildale communities, with friends and neighbors expressing shock, sadness, and disbelief. Social media posts from those who knew Ascencio describe her as a kind-hearted, hardworking woman who was beloved by friends, family, and co-workers.

“I’m heartbroken. Jasmine was always smiling, always looking out for others. This doesn’t feel real,” one friend wrote on Facebook.

Less is publicly known about Reveles, but early reports suggest the two were in a relationship, possibly living together at the time of the incident. Authorities have not disclosed any prior history of domestic violence or police calls to the residence, but investigators are continuing to examine the couple’s background and relationship dynamics.

    Investigation Continues

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case, working alongside the Kern County Coroner’s Office and forensic experts to complete a full timeline of events and determine what may have led to the fatal confrontation.

As is standard in such cases, toxicology results and autopsy reports are pending and will play a crucial role in finalizing the cause and manner of death. Law enforcement has not suggested that any other individuals were involved or present at the time of the shooting.

Detectives are urging anyone with information about the couple’s recent behavior or interactions to come forward. Friends, co-workers, or neighbors who may have noticed signs of distress or conflict are encouraged to contact the Kern County Sheriff’s Office at (661) 861-3110.

Rising Concerns About Domestic Violence and Mental Health

This incident marks yet another heartbreaking chapter in a growing pattern of domestic-related homicides and murder-suicide cases that have plagued communities across California and the U.S. in recent years. Local advocacy groups and mental health professionals are using this moment to underscore the importance of seeking help and intervening early when warning signs of domestic abuse or emotional crisis become apparent.

“This is a devastating loss of life that might have been preventable,” said a spokesperson from the Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault in Kern County. “We continue to urge individuals in difficult or dangerous relationships to reach out for help—whether you’re a victim or someone close to the situation who’s concerned.”

    A Community Left to Grieve

As investigators work to bring clarity to the tragic events of May 26, residents of the Park Meadows neighborhood and the broader Bakersfield area are left reeling from the violent loss of two young lives.

A small makeshift memorial with flowers and candles has begun to form outside the home on Park Meadows Drive, where friends and family have quietly gathered in remembrance.

Funeral arrangements for both Ascencio and Reveles have not yet been announced.

UPDATE: Injuries Reported, Suspect in Custody After Shooting Outside Meridian Mall in Okemos

Okemos, MI – May 30, 2025-A quiet Friday afternoon in Okemos was shattered by gunfire outside the Meridian Mall, where multiple shots were fired in the parking lot near Dick’s Sporting Goods, prompting a swift law enforcement response and temporarily placing the popular shopping center on lockdown.

The Meridian Township Police Department has confirmed that the incident occurred around 1:25 p.m. and involved at least one suspect who is now in custody. Authorities have confirmed that two people were injured in the shooting and were transported to a nearby hospital. The exact nature and extent of their injuries have not yet been released.

In an on-site interview with senior reporter Danny Valle, Meridian Township Police Chief Rick Grillo confirmed that emergency services responded within minutes of the first 911 calls. Upon arrival, officers found a chaotic scene in the parking area outside the mall’s Dick’s Sporting Goods entrance. Shell casings were located, and evidence markers could be seen lining the pavement as officers began their investigation.

“At 1:25 p.m., multiple gunshots were fired in the parking lot near Dick’s Sporting Goods,” Chief Grillo stated. “Two people have been injured, and they are being treated at an area hospital. We are still working to determine the full extent of those injuries.”

Shortly before 2:00 p.m., Meridian Township Police issued a public safety alert via social media, warning the community to avoid the area while the scene was secured and law enforcement ensured there was no active threat.

The Meridian Mall itself was placed on a temporary lockdown, with store employees sheltering customers inside until police lifted the restriction once it was clear that the shooting had occurred entirely outside the shopping center. No reports of violence within the mall were made.

    Suspect in Custody

Police have taken one unidentified suspect into custody. Details regarding the suspect’s identity, possible motives, or connections to the victims have not been publicly disclosed. Chief Grillo noted that investigators are still determining how many people may have been directly involved and whether the shooting was targeted or random.

At this point, authorities believe the situation is contained and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. However, the investigation remains active, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming hours.

    Investigation and Community Impact

Officers from Meridian Township Police, along with support from Ingham County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police, secured the scene and began collecting witness statements, reviewing surveillance footage, and processing forensic evidence.

A portion of the mall parking lot remained cordoned off well into the afternoon as detectives continued their work. Evidence tents and police vehicles surrounded the perimeter near the Dick’s Sporting Goods entrance, and a steady presence of emergency responders was seen coordinating the investigation.

For many in the Okemos and East Lansing communities, the incident has sparked anxiety and concern, especially coming at a time when public spaces are increasingly being scrutinized for safety.

“This is shocking,” said one local shopper who was in the mall at the time. “We come here all the time. It’s where our kids hang out. You just don’t expect this to happen in broad daylight.”

    Public Urged to Share Information

Meridian Township Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has video or photographic evidence, to come forward. Even those who may have seen suspicious behavior prior to the gunfire are asked to contact investigators to help piece together what led to the shooting.

“If you were in or near the parking lot around 1:25 p.m. and saw anything unusual, we need to hear from you,” said Chief Grillo. “Every detail helps.”

    How to Help

Those with information are encouraged to call the Meridian Township Police Department at (517) 853-4800 or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.

As the investigation continues, the community awaits answers — not just about what happened, but how such violence found its way into one of Mid-Michigan’s busiest shopping hubs.

Major Crash Alert: Semi Truck Collision on SB 675 to NB I-75 Ramp Leaves Vehicle Leaning Over Edge – Emergency Response Underway

Buena Vista Township, MI – May 30, 2025

A serious traffic incident occurred earlier today involving a semi-truck that collided with a guardrail on the southbound I-675 ramp leading to northbound I-75, leaving the massive vehicle dangerously leaning over the edge of the overpass. The crash triggered a significant emergency response, with authorities working urgently to secure the scene and prevent further damage or injury.

The Buena Vista Township Fire and Police Departments, along with Michigan State Police and other regional emergency crews, were dispatched to the scene. Although the response was delayed in being publicly reported, officials have now confirmed that no fatalities or life-threatening injuries have been reported at this time.

    Incident Overview:

The crash reportedly occurred during a mid-morning timeframe when a semi traveling along SB I-675 attempted to merge onto NB I-75. For reasons still under investigation, the truck veered off course, slammed into the guardrail, and came to a precarious stop with its cab hanging partially over the side of the elevated ramp.

Witnesses described a harrowing scene with the truck’s front wheels suspended over the edge, prompting immediate fears of a potential fall onto the roadway below. Traffic cameras captured the aftermath, showing the large commercial vehicle tilted at a sharp angle, with debris and diesel fluid scattered across the pavement.

    Emergency Response:

Crews from Buena Vista Township were among the first on scene, along with assistance from Saginaw County emergency services. Firefighters and rescue personnel worked to stabilize the semi, assess structural integrity of the guardrail and overpass, and ensure the safety of the driver, who was reportedly trapped briefly in the cab.

Specialized towing and recovery teams were called in to secure and eventually remove the truck from its dangerous position. Heavy-duty cranes were mobilized as a precaution in case the truck could not be safely pulled back without risking collapse.

    Traffic Impact:

Authorities temporarily shut down the SB I-675 to NB I-75 ramp, causing significant traffic delays and backups throughout the afternoon, especially for commuters heading north toward Bay City or south toward Flint and Detroit. Alternate routes were suggested, and MDOT issued travel advisories for drivers to avoid the area if possible.

As of late afternoon, crews continued working to clear the wreckage and assess any structural damage to the overpass, which could impact traffic patterns into the weekend.

    Investigation Ongoing:

Michigan State Police are leading the investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest the driver may have lost control due to a mechanical failure or weather-related road conditions, but no official cause has been confirmed.

Drug and alcohol testing is standard procedure in such accidents, and the driver is cooperating with investigators. Officials have not yet released the identity of the driver or the name of the trucking company involved.

    Safety Reminder:

Transportation officials are urging commercial and personal vehicle drivers alike to exercise caution when navigating highway ramps, particularly elevated ones where reduced visibility, sharp curves, and speed differentials can all contribute to dangerous conditions.

This incident follows a recent uptick in semi-truck crashes on Michigan interstates, prompting renewed calls for infrastructure updates, improved signage, and stronger guardrail systems along major trucking routes.

    Stay Informed:

Motorists are encouraged to monitor MDOT traffic updates, Michigan State Police alerts, and local news outlets for ongoing developments, road closures, and detour information as the recovery and investigation continue.

  • Macomb County Sheriff’s Office Confirms Identity of Man Found in Clinton River as Eastpointe Resident Gregory Leino, 59

Macomb County Sheriff’s Office Confirms Identity of Man Found in Clinton River as Eastpointe Resident Gregory Leino, 59

Mount Clemens, MI – May 30, 2025-The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has released an official update following the discovery of a body in the Clinton River on Thursday afternoon. Authorities have now confirmed the deceased as Gregory Leino, a 59-year-old resident of Eastpointe, Michigan.

Deputies were dispatched to the scene on May 29, 2025, after a 911 call reported a body floating in the river near downtown Mount Clemens, a city located along the Clinton River in southeastern Michigan. Emergency responders arrived quickly and recovered the body from the water with the assistance of the Macomb County Marine Division.

Following recovery efforts, the Macomb County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and determined that Leino’s cause of death was accidental drowning. Authorities emphasized that no signs of foul play were discovered during the investigation or autopsy.

“Based on our investigation and the findings from the Medical Examiner’s Office, this appears to be a tragic accident,” the MCSO stated in a press release issued Friday. “At this time, we do not suspect any criminal activity.”

The Sheriff’s Office has not yet disclosed the circumstances that may have led to Leino’s presence in the river. It is currently unclear whether he had entered the water voluntarily or fell in by accident. Investigators are working with Leino’s family and reviewing local surveillance footage to piece together his last known movements prior to the incident.

Leino’s death marks another sobering reminder of the dangers of open waterways, even in otherwise calm and shallow areas like those in Mount Clemens. The Clinton River, which winds through several Macomb County communities before emptying into Lake St. Clair, is popular for walking, kayaking, and fishing—but like any natural waterway, it presents risks, especially to individuals who may be alone or dealing with medical or mental health issues.

The MCSO extended condolences to Leino’s family and friends, asking the public for privacy and compassion as they grieve this unexpected loss.

“Mr. Leino’s loved ones are going through a very difficult time, and we encourage everyone to respect their privacy,” the agency said.

The Sheriff’s Office also reminded residents to exercise caution near rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water, especially as the region heads into the warmer months. Those with elderly relatives or loved ones facing medical challenges are encouraged to keep close communication and check-ins, particularly if they spend time outdoors or near public waterways.

Anyone with additional information regarding Leino’s last known whereabouts or circumstances leading up to the incident is encouraged to contact the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.

As of now, no further updates are expected unless new evidence arises. The case remains officially closed with the cause of death ruled as accidental drowning, with no criminal investigation pending.

Tragedy in Gibson County: Three Dead, One Critically Injured, and One Arrested in Haubstadt Shooting

    Haubstadt, Indiana — May 30, 2025

A quiet residential neighborhood in Haubstadt, Gibson County was shaken by a horrific act of violence Thursday night, leaving three people dead, one person critically wounded, and a 77-year-old suspect under arrest. Authorities say the tragedy appears to be an isolated domestic incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Patrick Waite, a 77-year-old resident of Haubstadt, was arrested at the scene and charged with multiple counts of murder following the deadly shooting that unfolded on South Scottsdale Drive around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 29.

According to Gibson County Sheriff Bruce Vanoven, dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire at a home in the otherwise peaceful neighborhood. Deputies and emergency responders rushed to the scene, where they immediately took Waite into custody without incident.

“When officers arrived, they quickly secured the area and apprehended the suspect,” Sheriff Vanoven stated during a press briefing. “Upon clearing the home, three individuals were discovered deceased and one was found in critical condition. Four additional individuals inside the residence were unharmed but witnessed the shooting.”

The identities of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. The critically injured individual was transported by emergency medical services to a nearby hospital and remains in grave condition, authorities confirmed.

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, but Sheriff Vanoven emphasized that the event was targeted and isolated, involving people known to each other. Law enforcement has not publicly disclosed the nature of the relationships between Waite and the victims, though neighbors and early reports suggest the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic or family dispute.

“This was not a random act of violence,” Vanoven assured the community. “We want to stress that there is no ongoing danger to residents in the area. The scene has been secured, and our investigation is ongoing with the assistance of multiple agencies.”

Among those responding and assisting in the investigation are the Indiana State Police, local detectives, and forensic units who have spent hours collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and piecing together a timeline of the deadly encounter.

Residents of Haubstadt, a small town known for its tight-knit community and relative calm, expressed disbelief and sorrow as news of the shooting spread.

“This just doesn’t happen here,” said one nearby neighbor who declined to be named. “We’ve always felt safe, but now there’s this sense of shock and loss that’s hard to put into words.”

Patrick Waite remains in custody at the Gibson County Jail, where he is expected to face formal charges in the coming days. A court appearance has not yet been scheduled, and it is unclear if he has retained legal counsel.

The scene on South Scottsdale Drive has become the focus of a major crime investigation, with law enforcement carefully examining what led to the deadly outbreak of violence. The four uninjured witnesses are being questioned and are expected to play a critical role in reconstructing the events that took place inside the home.

Local officials are encouraging anyone with information relevant to the case to contact the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office or Indiana State Police as they work to uncover the motive and circumstances surrounding this tragedy.

As the community mourns and families reel from the loss, the focus now turns to supporting the surviving victim, seeking justice for those lost, and understanding how such a devastating event could happen in the heart of Gibson County.

  • Navy Sailor Arrested in Illinois in Connection with South Carolina Memorial Day Mass Shooting

Navy Sailor Arrested in Illinois in Connection with South Carolina Memorial Day Mass Shooting

Navy Sailor Arrested in Illinois in Connection with South Carolina Memorial Day Mass Shooting

Little River, SC / North Chicago, IL — May 30, 2025

A 19-year-old U.S. Navy sailor has been arrested in Illinois in connection with a harrowing Memorial Day weekend mass shooting in South Carolina that left at least 10 people wounded, shaking a peaceful riverside community and prompting a multistate law enforcement effort to apprehend the suspect.

Shawon Shamarion Williams, a Navy seaman assigned to Naval Station Great Lakes, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and transferred to the Lake County Jail in northern Illinois. Williams, who held the rank of hull maintenance technician seaman, was stationed at the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Great Lakes, according to Cmdr. Jessica L. McNulty, spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.

The arrest stems from a chaotic and violent incident that unfolded in Little River, South Carolina, a coastal town near the North Carolina border, on Sunday, May 25. A private party boat had just returned to shore when gunfire erupted, injuring 10 people in what local authorities have described as a targeted attack triggered by a dispute among individuals disembarking from the vessel.

Cellphone footage captured by bystanders and later shared online shows the terrifying moments as panicked screams and gunshots rang out along the pier. Victims and witnesses described a sudden outbreak of violence that turned a festive occasion into a nightmare.

“We got shot coming off the boat,” said Jeremy Evans, one of the shooting victims. “We were on the pier. When I got hit, I took my shorts off and wrapped it around my wound.” Evans was shot in the leg and later posted a video update from his recovery, thanking supporters and calling for accountability.

“We were involved in a mass shooting. Ten of us got sprayed on this deck,” Evans said. He described the suspect opening fire while retreating from the scene. “He started shooting and running backwards.”

Authorities believe the shooting was sparked by a dispute that escalated rapidly after the boat docked. Investigators have not disclosed the nature of the quarrel or Williams’ alleged role in instigating the violence, but they have stated that more arrests may follow as the investigation continues.

Williams is currently being held on a fugitive of justice charge in Lake County, Illinois, and is scheduled to appear in court Friday morning. During that appearance, the extradition process to South Carolina is expected to begin. Once extradited, he faces multiple counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

The arrest has drawn national attention not only due to the violent nature of the crime but also because the suspect is an active-duty member of the U.S. Navy. The Navy has stated it is cooperating fully with law enforcement, and NCIS confirmed the handover of Williams to civilian authorities for prosecution.

“This type of behavior is deeply inconsistent with the values and standards of the United States Navy,” Cmdr. McNulty said. “We are working closely with South Carolina law enforcement and the NCIS as the investigation unfolds.”

Little River residents and victims’ families are left reeling in the wake of the violence, demanding answers and justice. Local officials have increased patrols in the area and are urging anyone with additional information or video footage to come forward.

    1. As the community mourns and recovers, and as legal proceedings begin, the arrest of Shawon Williams marks a significant development in a case that underscores the growing challenges law enforcement faces in addressing gun violence, even in traditionally quiet and safe areas.

Thomas Phelps, 33, Charged with First-Degree Murder in Fatal South Side Shooting

Thomas Phelps, 33, Charged with First-Degree Murder in Fatal South Side Shooting

CHICAGO, IL — A 33-year-old man has been formally charged with first-degree murder and several drug-related felonies in connection with the fatal shooting of Cordell L. Avant, 38, on Chicago’s South Side earlier this week.

Authorities say the shooting occurred on the afternoon of May 27, during a confrontation that escalated rapidly into violence. According to investigators, Thomas Phelps allegedly opened fire on Avant from inside a gray SUV, striking him multiple times. The incident took place in the 11000 block of South Ashland Avenue, a residential and commercial corridor that has seen periodic surges in violent crime.

Witnesses told police that the two men had been arguing moments before gunfire erupted. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses, as well as accounts from multiple eyewitnesses, helped investigators quickly identify Phelps as the primary suspect. He was apprehended within hours of the shooting during a coordinated operation led by the Chicago Police Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit.

The motive behind the altercation remains under investigation, though preliminary reports suggest the conflict may have been linked to an ongoing dispute possibly involving narcotics distribution. Alongside the murder charge, Phelps is also facing multiple felony counts related to illegal drug possession and distribution, according to prosecutors.

Phelps is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing on Friday, May 30, where prosecutors are expected to argue that he poses a significant flight risk and a danger to the public. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has confirmed they will seek to deny bond based on the severity of the charges and the defendant’s prior criminal history, which reportedly includes past arrests for weapons and drug offenses.

The victim, Cordell Avant, was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. He leaves behind family and loved ones who are now grappling with the sudden loss. A makeshift memorial with flowers and candles has been set up by residents near the location of the shooting, as the community mourns another life lost to gun violence.

    Community Response and Ongoing Investigation

Local leaders and residents have expressed frustration and sorrow following the incident, calling for stronger efforts to reduce gun violence in neighborhoods disproportionately affected by crime. “This is another heartbreaking reminder of the senseless violence that continues to plague our communities,” said a local alderperson. “We need more intervention, more support services, and more accountability.”

The Chicago Police Department has assured the public that the investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone with further information about the shooting or the events leading up to it to contact Area Two detectives or submit anonymous tips via CPD’s tip line or Crime Stoppers.

    Legal Outlook

If convicted of first-degree murder, Phelps faces a potential life sentence without the possibility of parole. The drug-related charges could further enhance his sentence under Illinois’ sentencing guidelines. Legal experts anticipate a high-profile trial given the violent nature of the offense and the community interest surrounding the case.

More details are expected to emerge following Friday’s detention hearing. The case will continue to be monitored closely by both law enforcement and community members alike.

Michigan State Police Fifth District Incident Report: Patrol Vehicle Struck During Roadside Assist

KALAMAZOO, MICH. — A Michigan State Police (MSP) patrol unit from the Fifth District’s Paw Paw Post was involved in a roadside incident on Thursday, May 30, when it was rear-ended during a routine car assist along I-94 westbound near mile marker 87 in Charleston Township. Despite the high-speed nature of the freeway and the significant impact, both troopers and the involved motorists avoided serious injuries.

At approximately 3:00 p.m., two troopers were assisting a stranded motorist on the shoulder of the freeway with their emergency lights activated, as required by state law for roadside stops. While stationary, their marked patrol vehicle was struck from behind by a Dodge Dart that had veered off the road. Preliminary investigation indicates that the Dodge Dart’s driver lost control of the vehicle while traveling at an unsafe speed for conditions and subsequently left the roadway, crashing into the back of the police vehicle.

Both state troopers sustained minor injuries in the crash and were treated at the scene. The driver of the Dodge Dart, who was also wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, was cited for multiple violations, including speeding and operating a vehicle with a suspended license. Authorities have confirmed that neither drugs nor alcohol were contributing factors in the incident.

Fortunately, there were no other reported injuries among those involved, and all vehicle occupants were confirmed to be wearing seatbelts. The affected section of I-94 experienced temporary lane closures as emergency responders cleared the scene and conducted an initial investigation, but normal traffic flow was restored shortly after.

This incident underscores the continued dangers that law enforcement officers and other emergency personnel face during routine traffic stops and roadside assists. It also highlights the importance of Michigan’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to slow down and, when possible, move over a lane when approaching emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road with lights activated.

“Our troopers put their lives on the line every day, even during what might seem like routine activities,” said a spokesperson for the Michigan State Police Fifth District. “This is yet another reminder of how critical it is for all drivers to remain alert, reduce speeds in emergency zones, and always pay attention to their surroundings.”

    Motorists are urged to:

    • Reduce speed when approaching emergency or disabled vehicles.
    • Move over one lane, if safe and possible.
    • Avoid distractions, such as mobile phones, while driving.
    • Always wear seatbelts and ensure passengers do the same.

The Michigan State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Additional charges could be considered pending further review.

The MSP Fifth District remains committed to enforcing traffic safety laws and ensuring the well-being of both the motoring public and law enforcement personnel. They urge the public to treat emergency scenes with caution and respect.
