Tragic Murder-Suicide Claims Three Lives in New Jersey Home, Including 10-Year-Old Girl

In a devastating act of domestic violence, three family members were found dead in their Burlington Township, New Jersey, home on Monday, August 8, 2016. Authorities have identified the deceased as 50-year-old Ruben Johnson Jr., his 48-year-old wife Mishanda, and their 10-year-old son, affectionately known as “Tre.” The incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide.

    A Quiet Neighborhood Shaken

The tragic event unfolded in a typically peaceful neighborhood on Sunflower Circle. Police were called to the residence around 10:15 p.m. after a concerned relative requested a wellness check. Upon arrival, officers discovered the three bodies inside the home. Investigators believe that Ruben Johnson Jr. fatally shot his wife and son before turning the gun on himself.

Neighbors expressed shock and disbelief at the incident. Fred Schwartz, who lives next door, recounted hearing what sounded like distant explosions, initially thinking they were fireworks. “I sure didn’t think gunshots at the time,” he said. Another neighbor, Kelly Feoli, remarked, “You always want to be cordial and be a good neighbor. But I guess you never know what’s behind the walls.”

    Remembering the Victims

The Johnson family was known in the community, and their sudden loss has left neighbors and friends grieving. The couple’s daughter, LoraVon Johnson, was away at college in Florida at the time of the incident. She, along with other family members, is now grappling with the unimaginable loss.

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Binghamton Fire Department announces the unexpected passing of one of its most beloved and respected members, Lieutenant Scott Pavlick, who died at his home on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025. He was 47 years old.

Lieutenant Pavlick began his career with the Binghamton Fire Department on April 1, 2008. Over the years, he distinguished himself through unwavering dedication, professionalism, and courage. Promoted to Lieutenant on March 1, 2023, he served with distinction on Engine 1, Group D.

Among his many commendations, Lt. Pavlick received a Fire Rescue Award in 2009 for rescuing a man trapped in a burning structure at 59 East Catherine Street. In April 2024, he played a pivotal role in a dramatic river rescue at Rock Bottom Dam, helping to save an unresponsive man by administering CPR, which ultimately restored a pulse.

Within the firehouse, Scott was known for his infectious smile, quick wit, and unwavering support for his fellow firefighters. He served as a mentor to many, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a word of encouragement. His presence brought comfort and camaraderie, making the firehouse feel like a second home for many.

Beyond his professional achievements, Scott was a loving husband to his wife, Jodi, and a devoted father to their 7-year-old son, Reagan. He cherished his family time, often coaching little league, assisting with homework, or enjoying family movie nights. His deep love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life.

The loss of Lt. Pavlick comes during a particularly challenging time for the Binghamton Fire Department, which is still grieving the line-of-duty death of Firefighter John “JR” Gaudet earlier this year.  The department and the broader community are united in mourning the loss of a true hero.

Funeral arrangements for Lt. Pavlick will be announced in the coming days. The Binghamton Fire Department asks the community to keep the Pavlick family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Lieutenant Scott Pavlick’s legacy of bravery, compassion, and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him. He served his community with honor and will be deeply missed.

Rest in peace, Lieutenant. Your watch has ended; we will carry on your legacy.

Tragedy in Milwaukee: Woman Fatally Shoots Husband During Heated Domestic Dispute, Says She Was ‘Just Tired’

Milwaukee, WI – A community was left stunned and heartbroken after a domestic dispute turned deadly in the early morning hours of May 31, when 58-year-old Doris Winters fatally shot her husband in what she later described as an act of frustration and emotional exhaustion. The shooting occurred inside an apartment complex on the city’s north side and has since sparked discussions about domestic violence, mental fatigue, and the tragic consequences of unresolved conflict.

    A Community in Shock

According to multiple witness accounts and police statements, residents of the apartment complex gathered outside after hearing the gunshot, only to witness a disturbing scene. Doris Winters, visibly distraught, walked calmly out of the building and dropped a handgun to the ground.

“She just came out, dropped the gun like she was done,” said one neighbor, who asked not to be identified. “We didn’t know what had just happened, but we knew it was bad.”

Shortly afterward, Milwaukee police confirmed that Winters had shot and killed her husband during a domestic argument inside their apartment. A probable cause statement reveals a chilling detail: she confessed on the scene.

“He called me a [expletive] for the last time and I just shot him… I just shot him,” Winters reportedly told officers. “So I just grabbed my gun and shot him. Because I’m just tired. I know I shouldn’t have shot him, but I’m just tired.”

    A Heated Argument Turns Fatal

Court documents reveal that the argument had escalated rapidly. A witness, who was present during the altercation, stated they attempted to calm both parties down when Winters picked up a handgun and declared it was loaded. The tension rose when the husband walked upstairs to speak with Winters’ mother—an act that further inflamed the situation, according to the police report.

The witness, standing between the feuding couple in an attempt to prevent violence, was unable to stop what happened next. In a moment that police described as “sudden and unprovoked,” Winters reached over the witness and shot her husband in the back.

“Get him out of here before I shoot him again,” Winters allegedly said afterward, according to the probable cause statement.

Two other individuals rushed to assist the wounded man, carrying him out of the apartment in hopes of saving his life. Sadly, emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

    Criminal Charges Filed

On June 4, the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office filed formal charges against Doris Winters. She faces one count of reckless homicide, a serious felony charge that can carry significant prison time if she is convicted.

The reckless homicide charge indicates that while prosecutors do not believe the killing was premeditated, Winters’ actions were considered criminally negligent and resulted in a fatal outcome.

She is currently in custody, and her bail hearing is scheduled for later this week.

Deeper Issues: When Exhaustion Turns to Violence

While the immediate facts of the case paint a disturbing picture, Winters’ emotional confession—“I’m just tired”—has prompted deeper questions about what led to such a tragic breaking point. It is not uncommon in domestic cases for years of emotional strain, verbal abuse, or psychological trauma to erupt suddenly into violence.

Experts on domestic abuse and mental health note that such cases often involve complex dynamics that go far beyond a single argument.

“This case is a painful reminder that emotional exhaustion, left unaddressed, can lead people to make irreversible decisions,” said Dr. Angela Moreno, a clinical psychologist specializing in family conflict. “But that does not excuse the violence. It only highlights the urgent need for support systems and intervention before things spiral out of control.”

    Community Response and Reflection

Local leaders and activists have urged residents to use this tragedy as a wake-up call about the importance of mental health resources and domestic conflict mediation.

“This didn’t have to happen,” said community organizer Sharon Ellis. “We need to do better at helping people before they get to the point of no return. Tired or not, there is always a better way.”

Authorities are continuing their investigation and reviewing any past history of domestic calls or complaints at the residence. Meanwhile, the community mourns the loss of life and grapples with how quickly emotional fatigue can lead to irreversible consequences.

As the case moves through the justice system, the haunting words of Doris Winters echo a reality far too common yet seldom addressed: sometimes, being “just tired” can become dangerously close to the breaking point—and that moment can change lives forever.

Outside of the classroom, Rob was equally involved in the heartbeat of the school district. Broomfield, CO – Law Enforcement Responding to External Threat Near A Precious Child Facility

BROOMFIELD, CO – A heightened law enforcement response is underway near the A Precious Child nonprofit headquarters, located in the 7000 block of W. 118th Avenue, following reports of a potential threat in the parking lot outside the facility. At approximately mid-morning, Broomfield authorities placed the building in “secure mode” out of an abundance of caution.

According to police, a man in the parking lot may be armed with a firearm, and officers are currently negotiating with him in an effort to peacefully resolve the situation. Authorities have emphasized that the threat is isolated outside the building and that there is no immediate danger to anyone inside.

As part of standard safety protocol, the facility initiated secure mode, which means all doors are locked and no one is allowed to enter or exit the building while normal activities continue inside. Secure mode is different from a lockdown or shelter-in-place—it is a preventative action designed to ensure safety from a threat located outside the premises.

In response to the situation, surrounding businesses and buildings have also been instructed to secure their entrances. Police continue to monitor and contain the area, and no injuries have been reported at this time.

Initially, a parent-child reunification point was established at 119th Avenue and Teller Street. However, as of 11:05 AM, officials have moved the reunification point to 119th Place and Reed Street to provide easier and safer access for families looking to pick up their children. Parents are encouraged to remain calm, follow the directions of police officers on the scene, and proceed to the new reunification site only if instructed to do so.

Police are working diligently to de-escalate the situation, and they are asking the public to avoid the immediate area to allow emergency personnel space to work. Updates will continue to be released as new details become available.

Community members are reminded that everyone inside A Precious Child is currently safe and secure. Local authorities are treating the matter with the utmost seriousness and are committed to resolving it without harm to anyone involved.

The community’s cooperation and patience are greatly appreciated during this time. Please monitor official channels for accurate, real-time updates and refrain from spreading unverified information on social media.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of preparedness, rapid response, and strong communication between public safety officials, schools, and families during times of uncertainty. We will continue to provide comprehensive updates as they are made available by the Broomfield Police Department.

Broomfield, CO – Ongoing Situation at A Precious Child Facility

This morning, a tense situation unfolded at A Precious Child, located in the 7000 block of W. 118th Avenue in Broomfield, prompting the facility and nearby buildings to enter “secure mode” for safety. According to Broomfield Police, the precautionary security measures were taken in response to a possible threat outside the building involving a man in the parking lot who may be armed.

Authorities quickly responded to the scene and are currently engaged in negotiations with the individual in question. At this time, there is no reported danger inside the facility, and law enforcement has emphasized that all children and staff are safe and secure within the building.

As part of the response protocol, nearby buildings have also been instructed to secure their doors, which restricts external access but allows regular activities to continue inside. This type of measure is designed to protect everyone inside while authorities manage and contain the situation outside.

Earlier this morning, a reunification point for concerned parents was established at 119th Avenue and Teller Street. However, as of 11:05 AM, that location has been moved to 119th Place and Reed Street to better facilitate a safe and organized reunification process for families.

Law enforcement has reiterated that there is no need for a broader shelter-in-place order for the surrounding neighborhood, as the threat remains localized and contained to the immediate area of the parking lot. Officers are continuing their efforts to de-escalate the situation peacefully.

Broomfield Police and school officials are working together to ensure the continued safety of everyone involved. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available. Families are urged to follow official instructions, remain calm, and avoid the area unless directed to the reunification point.

In moments like these, the strength of community and the professionalism of first responders make a critical difference. While the situation is still active, the measured and rapid response by local authorities has ensured that students and staff remain out of harm’s way.

We will continue to monitor and share developments as they are confirmed. Please stay tuned to official channels for the latest information.

Last night, Firewire received heartbreaking news that has shaken the firefighting community across North Carolina and beyond. With profound sorrow, we share the tragic loss of a dedicated firefighter from the Hickory Fire Department in Catawba County, who passed away after responding to a structure fire. This brave individual succumbed following their return from the demanding assignment—an ultimate sacrifice made in the line of duty.

The news has sent waves of grief through firehouses across the region. The firefighter, whose name has not yet been officially released pending notification of next of kin, served with distinction and honor. Their unwavering commitment to public safety, courage in the face of danger, and selfless devotion to duty exemplified the highest ideals of the firefighting profession.

To lose a firefighter under any circumstance is devastating. To lose one so soon after the fulfillment of their duty is a poignant reminder of the risks these heroes take every single day—facing danger not only at the scene, but often in the hours and days that follow. As the Hickory Fire Department and the greater Catawba County community gather to grieve, we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow firefighters who now bear the heavy burden of this loss. May their sacrifice never be forgotten, and may the memory of their bravery live on.

While details surrounding this individual’s passing remain private out of respect for the family and department, their death marks another painful moment for North Carolina’s firefighting fraternity. Retirement from service does not erase the legacy of protection and courage such individuals leave behind, and we remember this firefighter for the many lives they undoubtedly touched during their career.

In these moments of deep grief and reflection, the unity of the firefighting brotherhood and sisterhood becomes even more powerful. Across city lines, department walls, and county borders, firefighters and supporters stand together, mourning together, and honoring those who gave everything in service of their communities.

We encourage the public and fellow first responders to keep both families, as well as the Hickory and Mooresville Fire Departments, in their hearts and prayers. The days ahead will be difficult, filled with sorrow and remembrance—but also marked by the strength that comes from a shared legacy of service.

May the fallen rest in eternal peace. Your duty is done. We’ve got it from her
