The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) is investigating two separate, unrelated shootings that occurred overnight, leaving one man dead and another injured.

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at approximately 7:28 p.m., KDPS officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots in the 1400 block of N. Rose Street. Public Safety Officers arrived and located an 18-year-old male with a grazing wound. The victim stated he was riding his scooter home when he was shot at. He declined medical treatment and was unable to provide a suspect description.

Officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate any shell casings. No arrests have been made, and the suspect remains at large.

Just after 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, a KDPS officer was flagged down about a possible shooting in the area of Riverview Drive and East Paterson Street. While enroute, dispatch received additional calls confirming the shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located a 42-year-old male victim suffering from gunshot wounds to the head and abdomen. Officers initiated CPR, and the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 3:16 a.m.

Shell casings were recovered at the scene. Additionally, KDPS’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) has positively identified the suspect and is actively working to locate and apprehend the individual responsible.

FLORIDA — What should have been a day of family togetherness on Memorial Day ended in unimaginable heartbreak for the Maggs family. Olivia Maggs, a 32-year-old mother of three, tragically lost her life Monday after a freak accident on Interstate 95 in Florida. According to authorities, a truck’s tire blew out and detached, violently slamming into Maggs’ vehicle while she was driving with her children. Though her kids miraculously survived the crash, Olivia did not.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) confirmed that the fatal incident occurred in the northbound lanes of I-95 during the afternoon hours, as traffic was moderate with many families traveling for the holiday. Authorities have now identified the deceased as 40-year-old Norman Allen. The Lucas County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity Wednesday afternoon and released preliminary autopsy findings. Allen was struck by two bullets — one of which caused fatal internal injuries.

A Deadly Encounter

When police arrived at the scene, they found Allen lying in the grass near the gas station. Emergency responders attempted to treat his injuries on site before transporting him to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds. The coroner’s report indicates that Allen sustained a gunshot wound to the back, which resulted in damage to both the aorta and liver — critical injuries that ultimately led to his death. He also had a graze wound on his left shoulder.

The caller stated that three individuals had broken into their home and that their son had shot one of the intruders in self-defense. The caller, who was not present during the break-in, informed dispatch that the individual who had been shot appeared to be deceased and that the remaining two suspects fled the scene.

Upon arrival, officers located the deceased subject inside the residence. The home was cleared to ensure the safety of all individuals, and the scene was secured for further investigation.

The resident who fired the weapon fully cooperated with law enforcement, stating in a subsequent interview that he was inside the home when he heard a loud noise. Upon investigating, he observed three armed individuals breaking in—all of whom were described as Black males wearing all black, masks, and rubber gloves. Fearing for his life, the resident used his legally owned handgun to defend himself, striking one of the intruders. The two other suspects fled the home on foot.

Arrests and Charges

• Klifton C. Carter, 22, has been arrested and is currently booked into the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center. Carter is facing charges of Murder and Burglary under Indiana’s Felony Murder Rule, which allows individuals to be charged with murder if a death occurs during the commission of certain felonies, including burglary.
• Jaylen M. Drone, 21, is also in custody and has been booked into the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center. He faces identical charges: Murder and Burglary, also under the Felony Murder Rule. Investigators have identified Drone as one of the three intruders involved in the Sweetser Avenue break-in.

A warrant has been issued for the third surviving suspect, whose name is being withheld pending arrest. EPD is actively seeking this individual and encourages anyone with information to come forward.

Related Narcotics Investigation

During the broader investigation, officers obtained and executed search warrants on multiple homes and vehicles linked to the suspects. These searches uncovered evidence of narcotics trafficking, leading to the arrest of Cameron and Christian Thomas.
