Fatal Stabbing in Suburban Chicago During Robbery Attempt Deemed Self-Defense, Police Say

Chicago, IL – A violent confrontation during an attempted robbery in a quiet suburban neighborhood of Chicago ended in tragedy late Tuesday evening when one man was fatally stabbed. Authorities have confirmed that the incident appears to be a case of self-defense, carried out by the intended victim.

According to police reports, the attempted robbery occurred around 9:45 p.m. in the village of Oak Lawn, a southwest suburb of Chicago. Officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a disturbance and possible altercation near the intersection of 95th Street and Kostner Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found a man in his late 20s suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics shortly after.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased, whose identity has not yet been publicly released pending notification of family, had allegedly approached another man walking home from a nearby grocery store and attempted to rob him at knifepoint. Witnesses reported hearing a brief verbal exchange followed by a scuffle, during which the victim managed to wrestle the weapon away and turn it against the assailant in a desperate act of self-preservation.

Oak Lawn Police Chief James Radcliffe held a press conference Wednesday morning, stating, “All evidence at this time supports the conclusion that the individual who used deadly force did so in self-defense. Our officers are still conducting interviews and reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding businesses, but there is no indication that this was anything other than a tragic but lawful response to a violent threat.”

Authorities confirmed that the man who acted in self-defense, a 32-year-old resident of Oak Lawn, was fully cooperating with law enforcement and had no prior criminal history. He sustained minor injuries during the struggle but did not require hospitalization. No charges have been filed against him as of Wednesday afternoon.

Neighbors in the typically peaceful area expressed shock over the event. “You just don’t expect something like this to happen here,” said Martha Simmons, a local resident who lives less than a block from the scene. “It’s scary to think that someone just walking home could be attacked like that. I’m grateful he was able to defend himself, but it’s still heartbreaking that it had to come to this.”

The fatal stabbing has renewed conversations in the community around public safety and self-defense rights. Legal analysts note that Illinois law allows the use of deadly force if a person reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm.

Criminal defense attorney Michael Greeley, not associated with the case, explained, “In Illinois, self-defense is a powerful legal justification. The key issue is whether the use of force was proportionate and reasonable given the circumstances. Based on the facts emerging in this case, the individual appears to have been in a situation where his life was threatened, and he responded accordingly.”

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office is expected to review the case file once the police complete their investigation, though officials say it is unlikely that the surviving man will face prosecution unless new evidence surfaces.

As authorities continue to piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter, they urge anyone with information or video footage from the area between 9:30 and 10:00 p.m. Tuesday night to come forward.

“This was a traumatic event for everyone involved,” Chief Radcliffe added. “We are working diligently to ensure that justice is served, and that the community remains safe.”

The incident serves as a somber reminder of how quickly ordinary moments can turn into life-threatening situations — and how the right to self-defense, though protected by law, often comes at a heavy emotional and societal cost.

  • Man Shot by Off-Duty Chicago Cop After Allegedly Beating Woman in Fernwood Charged, Police Announce

Man Shot by Off-Duty Chicago Cop After Allegedly Beating Woman in Fernwood Charged, Police Announce

Chicago, IL — A man who was shot by an off-duty Chicago police officer after allegedly assaulting a woman in the city’s Fernwood neighborhood has been formally charged, authorities announced on Wednesday.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the incident occurred earlier this week on the South Side, prompting both public concern and an internal investigation. The suspect, whose identity has since been released by police, was reportedly in the midst of a violent altercation with a woman when the off-duty officer intervened.

Authorities say the officer, who was not in uniform at the time, witnessed the man physically attacking the woman and attempted to de-escalate the situation. Despite verbal warnings and commands to stop, the suspect allegedly continued the assault, prompting the officer to draw their weapon and fire. The man was struck and later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The woman involved in the incident suffered visible injuries, although officials have not disclosed the extent of her condition. She has since been treated and released, and is cooperating with investigators.

Following a review of the case and interviews with witnesses, police charged the man with multiple offenses, including aggravated battery and domestic violence-related crimes. Authorities emphasized that the charges stem not only from the alleged assault on the woman but also from his failure to comply with lawful orders from a peace officer.

The off-duty officer has been placed on routine administrative duty pending the outcome of an internal review, as is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has also launched an independent investigation into the use of force.

Community leaders in the Fernwood neighborhood have expressed mixed reactions. Some are praising the officer’s quick action to protect the woman, while others are calling for greater transparency in the investigation process. Several advocacy groups have highlighted the importance of ensuring that all instances of police use of force are thoroughly and impartially reviewed, regardless of the circumstances.

Chicago police officials have reiterated their commitment to public safety and accountability, stating, “While this off-duty officer acted in what appears to be defense of another, every use of force by our officers is taken seriously and subject to a rigorous review process.”

As the legal proceedings against the suspect continue, officials are encouraging anyone with additional information or who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

This case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in responding to violent crimes, especially when off-duty officers become involved. It also highlights the continuing dialogue around police conduct, use of force, and public trust in communities across Chicago.

With a Heavy Heart: In Loving Memory of Solomon Pino

It is with immense sorrow and a broken heart that I share this devastating news—my beloved father, Solomon Pino, has been found, but he is no longer with us. Words cannot fully express the pain and grief our family is feeling right now. This is a loss beyond comprehension.

To everyone who took the time to share my posts, offer kind words, provide tips, pray with us, or simply hold our family in your thoughts—thank you. Your outpouring of love, compassion, and solidarity carried us through the most difficult moments. We are deeply moved by your kindness and generosity.

A very special thank you goes to the search teams, local volunteers, and all those who took it upon themselves to join in the efforts to locate my dad. Your determination, energy, and selfless dedication will never be forgotten. The community came together in such a powerful and heartfelt way, and that gave us hope even when the days felt impossibly heavy.

To all who lit candles, sent messages, searched terrain, made calls, or simply stood by us during this painful journey—may you be blessed in countless ways. Your support made a difference, and we felt every bit of it.

UPDATE & CONTEXT – Please Continue Sharing:

Before my father was found, we were doing everything we could to locate him. The last known activity was on May 1st, 2025, when his phone pinged in the Cuba Mesa area. Sadly, that was the last trace we had.

On the morning of May 7th, we held a search briefing, and here are the areas that had already been thoroughly covered:

    • Mt. Taylor (San Mateo)

    • San Miguel

    • San Gregorio (though conditions were tough due to snowpack and limited access)

    • Eureka

    • Ponderosa

    • North Gallina

    • 313 Mudsprings

    • Bottom of Bluebird Mesa (access to the top remains extremely difficult)

    • Coyote South 103

    • Roads 69 and 70

In addition, Zia Police Department established a base camp at Cuba Mesa, where Andrew Toribio had been stationed to assist with coordination. The determination of everyone involved in the operation—from professionals to community members—was nothing short of extraordinary.

Despite our best efforts, we faced multiple obstacles during the search. Sadly, my father did not meet the criteria for a Silver Alert according to the state, which limited certain urgent resources. We also encountered red tape with accessing critical information from his bank, Verizon, and OnStar, despite our persistence and the situation’s urgency.

Throughout it all, we continued following every credible lead and investigated every suggestion brought to our attention. We left no stone unturned. I’m forever grateful for those who reached out with ideas, comfort, and practical help. We truly leaned on our community during this search.

Though the outcome is not what we had hoped for, I know my father felt the love surrounding him. And I believe that love will continue to carry us forward as we now begin to mourn, remember, and celebrate the life of a man who meant so much to us.

Please keep my family in your thoughts and prayers as we try to navigate this enormous loss. Your continued support means more than words can ever say.

    With heartfelt thanks and love,

Havre Police Investigating Suspicious Death on 14th Avenue

Havre, MT – May 7, 2025 — Authorities in Havre have launched an investigation into the death of a woman found inside a home in the 300 block of 14th Avenue, describing the circumstances surrounding her passing as suspicious.

According to the Havre Police Department (HPD), officers responded to a call at approximately 2:14 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7. Upon arrival at the residence, officers discovered the body of a deceased adult female. Police officials confirmed that the woman’s body was completely intact and showed no immediate signs of external trauma or injury that could clearly point to a cause of death.

While few specific details have been released to the public pending further investigation, HPD stated that the scene presented several elements that raised concerns and suggested a possibility of foul play. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the woman, nor have they released any information about whether the victim was known to residents of the home or if any individuals are currently being considered suspects or persons of interest.

“The circumstances observed at the scene lead us to treat this case as suspicious in nature,” a spokesperson for HPD said. “At this point in the investigation, we cannot rule out the potential of foul play.”

Detectives, along with forensic specialists, spent several hours at the scene on Tuesday afternoon collecting evidence, photographing the area, and canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses or surveillance footage that may provide more insight into the events leading up to the discovery.

Neighbors expressed concern and surprise at the police activity in the quiet residential area, which is not commonly known for criminal activity. Some residents said they were startled to see emergency vehicles and crime scene tape surrounding the property and hoped for answers soon.

“It’s really shocking,” said one nearby resident who asked to remain anonymous. “This is a close-knit street, and we don’t usually see anything like this around here. I just hope the police find out what happened.”

The woman’s body has been transported to the state medical examiner’s office for a full autopsy. Authorities are hoping the results will provide clarity on the cause and manner of death, which could either confirm or rule out criminal involvement.

HPD emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. Tips can be provided anonymously by contacting the Havre Police Department or submitting information through local Crime Stoppers channels.

As the community awaits further updates, police are working diligently to piece together the timeline of events and determine whether this tragic death was the result of natural causes, an accident, or a deliberate act.

  • Park County Sheriff’s Office Arrests Suspect in Assault on Myer’s Flats

Park County Sheriff’s Office Arrests Suspect in Assault on Myer’s Flats

Park County, MT – A tense and potentially dangerous situation unfolded late Tuesday evening in the Myer’s Flats area, as the Park County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) responded to an assault call involving a firearm. Authorities have confirmed that a suspect, 28-year-old Isaiah Lois Elijah Borquez, has been arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and aggravated assault.

The incident began to unfold around 8:30 p.m., when deputies were dispatched to the scene following a 911 call reporting a violent confrontation. According to PCSO, initial reports suggested that an AR-style rifle was involved in the altercation. The presence of a high-powered firearm immediately escalated the urgency of the response.

Deputies, along with tactical support, arrived on the scene and began to secure the area, setting up a perimeter to ensure public safety and prevent the suspect from fleeing. Law enforcement officers worked through the night, deploying de-escalation strategies and gathering intelligence from witnesses and nearby residents. During this period, law enforcement also made efforts to communicate with the suspect, urging him to surrender peacefully.

After several hours of negotiation and careful coordination, the suspect, later identified as Borquez, was taken into custody without further incident at approximately 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Authorities have not disclosed whether the AR-style rifle was recovered at the scene, but emphasized that the situation was resolved without injury to law enforcement personnel or bystanders.

Borquez now faces serious felony charges, including assault with a weapon and aggravated assault. Both charges are considered violent offenses under Montana state law and could carry significant prison time if convicted. The Park County Sheriff’s Office has stated that the investigation remains ongoing, with detectives continuing to collect evidence and interview witnesses to determine the full circumstances leading up to the assault.

“We take any incident involving a firearm very seriously,” said a spokesperson for the PCSO. “Our priority is always to protect the public and to respond with professionalism and caution. We are grateful that this dangerous situation was resolved safely and that the suspect is now in custody.”

Officials have not yet released the identity of the victim or the nature of their injuries, citing privacy concerns and the ongoing investigation. The relationship between Borquez and the victim has also not been confirmed.

The Park County Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward and contact the department directly. Community members in the Myer’s Flats area are encouraged to remain vigilant but reassured that there is no ongoing threat related to this case.

Borquez is currently being held at the Park County Detention Center. Arraignment and court proceedings are expected to take place in the coming days.

  • Centralia Man Charged With First-Degree Rape of a Child After Lengthy Abuse Investigation

Centralia Man Charged With First-Degree Rape of a Child After Lengthy Abuse Investigation

A 40-year-old Centralia man, Terry Joe Ayres Jr., has been formally charged with first-degree rape of a child following a months-long investigation into allegations of ongoing sexual abuse. Ayres was arrested on the evening of Friday, May 2, 2025, and remains held in the Lewis County Jail on $1 million bail and a 72-hour investigative hold.

The charge against Ayres — first-degree rape of a child — is a Class A felony under Washington state law, carrying a maximum penalty of life in prison. The severity of the charge reflects the disturbing nature of the allegations, which involve the repeated sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14 over a three-year period.

According to court documents filed in Lewis County Superior Court, the case originated from a report made to Child Protective Services (CPS) in December 2024. On December 16, CPS alerted the Centralia Police Department after a minor reported being sexually assaulted by Ayres. The child, a Centralia resident, disclosed that the abuse had been ongoing since approximately 2021.

Investigators from the Centralia Police Department launched a comprehensive investigation following the referral. According to the declaration of probable cause filed Monday, evidence gathered during the inquiry supported the child’s claims and ultimately led to Ayres’ arrest last week. Police and prosecutors have not disclosed additional details about the case in order to protect the identity and well-being of the victim.

Ayres was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Lewis County Jail shortly after 6:44 p.m. on May 2. Prosecutors filed the formal charge on Wednesday, May 7, after reviewing the initial findings of the investigation.

Due to the serious nature of the allegations and the potential risk to the community, prosecutors requested high bail and the 72-hour hold to allow investigators time to continue gathering evidence and to consider whether additional charges may be warranted.

First-degree rape of a child applies when an adult engages in sexual intercourse with a child younger than 12 years old, provided the perpetrator is at least 24 months older. It is one of the most serious charges in Washington’s criminal code.

Ayres is expected to make his next court appearance in the coming days, where a judge may review the conditions of his bail and hear arguments regarding the ongoing investigation.

Authorities encourage anyone with additional information related to the case to contact the Centralia Police Department. The investigation remains active.
