  • Hearing Delayed for Saginaw Teen Charged as Adult in Fatal Shooting of Taylor M. Burton

Hearing Delayed for Saginaw Teen Charged as Adult in Fatal Shooting of Taylor M. Burton

Hearing Delayed for Saginaw Teen Charged as Adult in Fatal Shooting of Taylor M. Burton

SAGINAW, MI – June 2, 2025- A tragic case that has gripped the Saginaw community took another turn on Monday as a scheduled court hearing for a local teen accused in a fatal shooting was postponed, further delaying the judicial process in a case that has left a young man dead and two families devastated.

Vincent M. Barrera, a 16-year-old from Saginaw, is facing adult charges in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Taylor M. Burton, an incident that occurred earlier this year outside a local elementary school. On the morning of Monday, June 2, Barrera made a brief appearance via Zoom from the Saginaw County Juvenile Detention Center before District Judge Elian E.H. Fichtner.

The court session was originally set to proceed with a preliminary examination, a key stage in Michigan’s criminal process where prosecutors present evidence and witnesses testify to determine whether there is sufficient cause for the case to advance to trial. However, the hearing was delayed, with no new date immediately set.

The reason for the delay was not publicly disclosed, but such postponements are common in complex or high-profile cases, especially those involving juvenile defendants being tried as adults. Given the gravity of the charges and the age of the accused, the court is likely weighing multiple factors, including procedural safeguards, evidentiary concerns, and mental competency evaluations.

    The Case So Far

The shooting of Taylor M. Burton stunned the community. Burton was reportedly shot near an elementary school—a location that intensified public concern due to its proximity to children and families. Specific details surrounding the motive and the events leading up to the shooting have not been publicly disclosed, as the investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities arrested Barrera shortly after the incident and opted to charge him as an adult due to the seriousness of the crime. Under Michigan law, juveniles as young as 14 can be tried as adults for certain violent offenses, including homicide.

Barrera is currently being held at the Saginaw County Juvenile Detention Center, though the adult charges mean he could ultimately face trial in adult court and, if convicted, serve time in an adult correctional facility.

    Community Impact

The case has sparked grief, confusion, and concern throughout Saginaw. Taylor M. Burton is remembered by family and friends as a young man with potential and a warm personality. His loss has sent shockwaves through his social circles, with vigils, tributes, and social media posts expressing deep sorrow and calling for justice.

At the same time, Barrera’s age has raised difficult questions about youth violence, community resources, and the juvenile justice system’s ability to prevent such tragedies before they unfold. Advocates on both sides are closely watching how the case develops, particularly in how the legal system balances accountability with the reality that the accused is still a minor.

    What’s Next

With the preliminary examination delayed, it may be weeks or even months before the case resumes. During that time, both the prosecution and the defense will continue to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and prepare their arguments.

The Saginaw County Prosecutor’s Office has not commented publicly on the delay, and defense attorneys for Barrera have also remained silent, likely due to the sensitive nature of the case.

For now, both families—Burton’s and Barrera’s—remain caught in a painful legal limbo, awaiting answers and justice in a case that continues to unfold.

Cheyenne Police Arrest Man in Violent Stabbing Incident on Pattinson Avenue

CHEYENNE, WY – June 2, 2025 — A Cheyenne man is in custody after a violent stabbing left another man with life-threatening injuries in a residential neighborhood on Sunday evening.

The Cheyenne Police Department responded to a call for service at approximately 6:18 p.m. on June 1, 2025, in the 2400 block of Pattinson Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male victim suffering from multiple stab wounds. Emergency personnel immediately rendered aid at the scene before transporting the victim to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

According to police, the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Sterling Null, had already fled the scene before officers arrived. Witnesses informed police of Null’s identity and direction of travel, prompting a swift manhunt. Investigators say Null was later located and taken into custody without further incident.

Details of the attack reveal a deeply disturbing sequence of events. Authorities say that prior to the stabbing, Null was observed driving a Dodge passenger car at an excessive rate of speed. He entered a parking area on Pattinson Avenue, where he crashed into a vehicle belonging to a family member, causing a chain-reaction collision that pushed the impacted vehicle into the victim’s parked truck.

Witnesses reported that following the crash, Null exited his vehicle and attempted to flee. When the victim saw him and called out, asking for an explanation or attempting to intervene, Null turned around and allegedly charged at the unarmed victim in an aggressive and violent manner.

According to CPD, Null swung his arm back and repeatedly thrust a knife into the victim’s torso, inflicting several stab wounds before fleeing the scene on foot. Multiple residents in the area witnessed the altercation and provided statements to officers.

“This was an extremely violent and targeted attack that could have easily turned fatal,” said a CPD spokesperson. “Thanks to the quick response of residents and our officers, the suspect was apprehended before anyone else was harmed.”

Cheyenne Police say they believe the incident may have stemmed from a personal dispute, but the investigation remains active. Detectives are working to gather all relevant details, including the events leading up to the confrontation and any possible motives.

Sterling Null has been arrested and is currently being held at the Laramie County Detention Center. Formal charges are expected to be filed soon, which may include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and other related offenses.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional information is urged to contact Cheyenne Police Detectives at (307) XXX-XXXX. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the department’s crime reporting line.

The Cheyenne Police Department extends its thoughts to the victim and his family as he continues to fight for his life.
